If you run a high torque motor you can gear it up. For example my Trinity P2K2 motor which is a higher torque motor I usully gear it around 22 to 23 on the pinion.

torgue is the amount of strength the motor has for example a ferrari has a high speed engine but put it in a truck and it wont move this is because it has little torque were as a truck motor will launch a truck off the line but not reach that much top speed

same applies to rc, if you have a low torque motor general you gear it lower so that it can take off at a decent speed, with a high torque motor you gear it higher so it has a decent top speed.

hope this helps
