Beginner - Need some advice

Hi,

my almost-11 son is interested in getting a nitro racer. He's had electric ones for several years, but now wants something with more speed. These seem a little extravegant to me unless he actually got into racing it. Do you think he's too young for the nitro? What about for getting into racing? There is an RC car racing club that's not too far that I'm investigating but so far I haven't gotten any responses.

Thanks!

nitro is a little more difficult, the engines need to be broken in correctly and must then be tuned for optimal performance. it's not just put some fuel in and drive

KAREN,
QUESTION FIRST? WHAT LEVEL OF RACING OR MODIFICATION IS HE AT WITH HIS ELECTRIC? I RACE ELECTRIC ONLY AND CAN HONESTLY, WITHOUT PREJUDICE, SAY THAT AN ELECTRIC CAR WITH A MODIFIED MOTOR IS CAPABLE OF SIMILAR SPEEDS AS A NITRO CAR. IT SOUNDS LIKE YOUR SON IS A "CASUAL" RCer. IF HE ALREADY HAS EQUIPMENT TO SUPPORT ELECTRIC , IT WOULD BE SO MUCH EASIER TO STAY WITH IT AND JUST STEP UP TO BETTER QUALITY AND HIGHER PERFORMING ELECTRIC ITEMS. NAMELY; MODIFIED MOTORS, MATCHED BATTERIES, RACE QUALITY ELECTRONIC SPEED CONTROLS.
ASSUMING HE'S NOT AT THIS LEVEL NOW....MAYBE HE SHOULD EXPLORE THIS AVENUE BEFORE MAKING A POTENTIALLY FRUSTRATING MOVE TO NITRO. HOPE THIS HELPS.

Default Never too young for nitro

Kcarron;

My 8 yr old Son has been racing (Nitro/Gas) R/C Cars for over a year now and has several 1st place finishes to his name to boot.

For racing it all depends on what kind of R/C cars your Son owns now. Hobby Quality R/C cars are really what is nesessary to compete in the local R/C races. Electric or Nitro can BOTH be fun, but Nitro can sometimes be fustrating for the average person.
