I've been looking for a Sturdy Bird or something similar, with very little luck. What is the best trainer plane that is readily available?

It depends on what type of airplane you want to get into, gas, glow or electric? Do you have a flying field with a club nearby? If not, you may want to consider small electrics (please stay away from injected foam "warbird" types, they are not very crash-worthy), far better are flat EPP foamie's.

Go to Horizon Hobby and click on airplanes then scroll down to trainer planes. Wala, take your pick.
