Default 1/8TH ELECTRIC SPEED CONTROLLERS. THE GOOD THE BAD?

Looking into getting a 1/8e buggy to race. I know nothing about the Speedos for them and was hoping to get some input as to what's good and what may be bad? I've liked LRP in the past but i'm not sworn to one and was actually thinking about trying the new castle stuff but seems on the cheap side. Don't like the thought of Novak cause it's one and done now, no service. I haven't used a Tekin product sense the 80's but never had a problem with there stuff. Thanks for any input.

Love Hobbywing stuff. I have had zero problems with my old Xerun 150a. I had old Castle Mamba Monsters and they were absolute garbage. The new ones seem better but I'll never own Castle again.

Tekin RX8 or the Hobbywing XR8 plus are the preferred esc these days.

Hobbywing Ezrun Max 8, is awesome, had LRP and Novak before. The Max 8 is by far better than my previous ESCs. It has no problem running 1600-2400 KV motors, and high discharge 4s lipos. no issues.

And for what its worth the LRP has become stagnant development wise.

The new LRP is very good. Way better than the older one. If I couldn't get HW at the price I can I would get the LRP.

Castle stuff is junk. Hobbywing is maybe a step above castle. I have a hobbywing in mine now and it's junk. Tekin rx8 is the way to go. Just like anything else...you get what you pay for.

I keep Tekins in my rigs. I feel like they are the best value FOR ME. I buy used ones , which usually run great forever. If one does go bad , Tekin replaces them out of warranty with a brand new one for $130.00

The Hobbywing stuff is good too . I ran a sctpro esc and 1900 motor and it was good. The software is a bit "buggy". LVC has funny habits , program lcd always seem to work a different way each time I used it . Their 1/8 escs are huge , and really ugly to me. But good value and smooth.

Tower has a few of the NOVAK active 8 systems and motors left , and while I know they went under , that system for well under $200 is a great deal support or not.

Would be curious to check out a new castle sensored system but have no desire to spend $ to try it.

I use the hobbyking x-car brand esc's in my 1/10th and 1/8th vehicles and love them. Had no problems other than one esc in the 2wd buggy that I cant belive the abuse i gave to it, hung in there way longer than my tekin and lrp stuff. The 10th scale is $35 and 8th scale is $50, can't really go wrong even to just give the stuff a try. I do buy good motors though, tekin or smc

I have used a variety here from Hobbywing, Viper, Castle, Speed Passion, and Tekin.

My opinion, look for features that fit your needs and go from there. My last 1/8 ESCs were the latest Castle Creations MM-X ESCs using sensored motors with the sensored harnesses. They did what I expected. The one that did have an issue was replaced quickly by castle. I was glad to have the 1 year warranty they came with as it gave some piece of mind as if you feel your stuff is the best, I never understood why you couldn't be an industry leading warranty on the ESC.

That said, all the esc's I have tried I would try again. Some have benefits on fitment others don't like the Tekin ones.

As it sits, the current ESC I use at least for 1/10 4wd SCT that I will try on 1/8 e buggy will be the XR8 SCT edition. Has some really nice features and a hand held programmer is a plus.

That last part is an innaccurate statement. They are releasing a new 10th scale esc this week and a new 1/8th esc here in a couple months

That's good to know the MM-x is a decent esc because I picked one up for cheap and have been debating whether or not to use it in my track 4x4 sct or put it in my basher. Kinda stinks they require the harness though =/

honestly I wasn't big on the harness either at first, but when I used it I kind of ended up liking it as I found it a bit easier to connect to the esc than plugging in the sensor wire.

I just wish the programmer card they have was digital like hobbywings and the battery side wires were on posts.
