Default Charger Power Supply

I was looking at a Hi-Tec X2-400 charger, and was wondering, do I need a power supply that produces 800w or 400w to get the full potential?

Thank you

Each port on the X2-400 is capable of 400 watts, for a total of 800W. You will need an 800W power supply to use this charger at full capacity. Our 50A power supply is more than capable for this charger.

Depending on the pack voltages you plan on charging the full Wattage capability of the charger and power supply may not be needed. For example on 2S packs the charger can only achieve 168 Watts per channel (8.4V full charge x 20A = 168W).

In any case don't forget to add an allowance for the charger efficiency. The charger itself uses some power to operate. To be safe add at least 20 to 25% extra.

LOL, bear with me here

Say I have an iCharger 208b, 350w@18volts
But my power supply is 12v 575w 47amps

What does this mean? Will I never be able to achieve the 350watts with this PS, because it is 12volts. Will I be able to charge at the 20amp rate? Does this mean I should be looking for a different power supply?

Charging 20amps with Im assuming 2s lipos is around 8.4V x 20amps = 168W

Your power supply can produce 575W, your charger can output 350W, you will be fine!

This is what is confusing me, the charger says it can produce 350w but with 18v

The PS is only 12v, so doesn't that mean I will never see 350w?

Also I will be charging 3s batteries, maybe 2 at a time

I just had a look at the specs at the charger, What they mean by 350W @18V is the charger is capable at charging the maximum 20 amps at 18v, (18V x 20 amps =350W)

Charging anything over 18V the amps will start to drop since the charger can only produce 350W. (ie 5S @16.7 amps, 6S @ 13.9 Amps, 8S @ 10.4 amps)

You have nothing to worry about, your power supply is more than capable

Whats confusing me is , ya talk to Horizon hobby, Tower , other forums or others. They tell ya dont need a charger with power supply. Those type chargers are for the Pro racers . Then ya come here & its a different story.. IDK ...

The rating refers to the input or power supply voltage (350W @ input voltage > 18V). With a 12V power supply the charger is limited to about 259 watts for higher voltage battery packs. About 15.4A for a 4S, 10.2A for a 6S, etc. It's explained at the bottom of page 10 of the manual.

I agree on 3S it won't be limited by power but rather the 20A max, as 252W is the maximum power needed (20A x 12.6V).

So say I charge two 3s packs 6500mah, that would be 13amps@1c

So that is 164watts, so in that senario the 12v 47a 575w PS would be sufficient?

Yes your power supply is more than capable of charging your 3s packs in parallel.

I would bump it up to 20amps which will give you a slightly faster charge

Convert a DPS600 power supply like I did, cheap.

Depends on the pack Voltage, how many series cells. 2S, 4S, etc.
