Default Castle Creations Sidewinder 3800 Motor - what turn is this?

I have a Sidewinder Motor that is the 3800 motor. I can't find any information on turn for this motor. What turn motor is this?

kv doesn't really translate to turns correctly. Technically it's a 1 turn motor.

Sidewinder SCT combo includes:
• Sidewinder SCT Edition ESC
• Neu-Castle 1410 1y 3800 kv motor
• CC Blower fan shroud for 36mm motors

I've been wondering this too. I see plenty of classes running 17.5T or 13.5T motors, but the majority of motors are rated in Kv, so how does one go about picking a motor to run in a class that is rated in T instead of Kv???

If there is a spec defined, then just go to the guy enforcing the spec, maybe the track owner or shop keeper. I'm sure he'll have plenty of suggestions. After that, maybe post back here for alternative suggestions.

Having done just that, and being told its simple 17.5T, really doesnt help, as there seems to be very few sensorless 17.5T motors out there.

You can run sensored motors on sensorless esc.

You also need to use a ROAR approved motor if the track is using the 17.5 spec. You cannot base it off Kv.

I was just reading this on another thread and it seemed that most said you can not. As the cogging becomes severe. I don't really understand why, as the sensor only tells the speed control the position the rotor is at. I don't understand why it cause more cogging than a sensorless motor.

Back in the early days of brushless motors, the sensorless motors were typically slotless (very "clean" back EMF signal and no cogging torque), while the sensored motors were slotted (messier back EMF signal, lots of cogging torque). This would indeed cause problems if you tried to run a sensored motor on a sensorless controller.

Times have changed, and nowadays you should be able to run most any motor with a good sensorless controller.

from what I've seen for info on Tekins web site I believe a 3800 kv motor roughly translates to a 5 turn motor.

try this

But even that confuses me, since they have two listed as 2.5T one at 6800Kv and one at 7800Kv. And then if you look at a sensored 2.5T its rated at 11,900Kv.

Larger motors requires fewer turns than a smaller motor for a given Kv, due to the larger surface area of the rotor. Therefore, you cannot use the turn # to compare motors of different sizes.

Also this normally assumes a 2 pole motor. the 1410 is a 4 pole.

Ok, so I am now even more confused by all of this. It appears that there are 2 measurements.... one in turns and the other in KV. Which is the most known and used? It would seem the turn. and yet someone else brought up a good point on the number of poles. What does that all mean?

I will ask the guys at my track as I would really like to know. There are 3 classes (17.5t - stock, 13.5t - sportsman, and modified) for the buggy and it would be nice to know where I would need to go without looking too stupid.

Thanks for helping the newbie and for the responses thus far.
