Angry Gens Ace Lipo DOA?!

I ordered a pair of 5000mah 4s 40C Gens Ace hard packs and just soldered on plugs. When I went to charge the first pack it balance charged fine.

The second pack showed 0.00V on the first cell then spiked to around 3.86V then dropped to less than 0.33V then back to 0.00V. Brand new lipo never used...has this happened to anyone else?

happened to me also, i just charged it on NiMh for about 5 minutes and then switched it to lipo charge and all was good from there. or just return it.

Weird I have plenty of Gens Ace lipos in 2s and 3s but none had these issues. I had a Sky Lipo that I had to charge in NiMH mode for a bit before I could balance charge after a long run.

On cheap lipos I set my LVC to 3.4V/cell now.

I guess I'll have to send it back to HobbyPartz.com already sent them an email.

I have two and they both have have non-consistant charge times. We get what we pay for I guess!

I would send it back or call them and see what they say.

Questions??

Tell me this is one weird pack.

Following inferno13's tip I charged it on NiMH mode for 5 min then went to balance charge. Well at least the first cell had voltage in the 4V range...then dipped down to 3.8V then eventually fluctuating between 0.00V and 0.23V finally 0.00V and the charger of course stopped.

I tried it again in NiMH mode again this time for about 6 min. Same thing eventually first cell would drop to 0.00V again.

This morning I decided the hell with it and put the buggy on a block and ran the pack at 1/4 throttle until LVC cut off I set at 3.4V/cell.

Then I balanced charged and now it's actually holding charge! Should I send it back or keep it? Will this be a problem later on or is it because it's a fresh pack?

your call on this one, if it is holding charge now, might want to run it and charge it a couple times to make sure everything is good. maybe just needed to wake it up, any more problems i would return it.

The only part that concerns me is HobbyPartz's warranty on their website is very vague which is smart on their part. They said any products used cannot be returned. By used this can mean many things. For instance soldering on a connector, charging it, running it on an r/c off the ground, etc.

They don't seem to mention anything on lipos or batteries in their warranty. I'll try running it at 1/4 throttle again to LVC then repeat balance charge to see if the first cell is ok.

But when a cell drops like that to 0.00V that is a big no no to me.

call them first or wait for a reponce from them before going any further and see what they say.

I believe warranty is 30 days from date of purchase. I had a brand new 4s lipo where the case separated. I used lipo storage mode since I wouldn't be using it for a while. They would not honor warranty.

Also had (3) 2s lipo packs go bad after the first day of owning them...ended up sending them all back.

There have been plenty of threads started about these batteries and internal soldering issues. Maybe one of the solder contacts came loose. That said, I've had two 2cells and have not had a problem with either.

Well the questionable pack charged up strangely.

After completion it shows 4.19V 4.20V 4.19V and 4.20V is this acceptable?

I balanced charged it twice already and still showing the same numbers.
