Hi guys,
I'm running a Mamba Monster and 2200kv motor in my 8ight E. I'm pretty sure the speed control got so hot it shut off during the main last night. It stopped on the track (when I was in the friggin lead after about 10 minutes in to a 12 min main) and I thought I had broken something so I just gave up. A few minutes later It worked just fine. After the races, I ran another battery and it did the same thing. My motor has always run hot (175+ and I've seen 200). I temped the speed control after my test run and it was at 185.
Why the heck am I running so hot? I have a 45 tooth spur and I have tried anywhere from a 12 tooth pinion to a 16, all with similar results. The best results I had was with a bigger pinion and dialed back to about 80% throttle EPA.
I am in Phoenix and its hot as balls out here, but still......200/185 seems excessive. Its technically a truggy motor so I would think it would run nice and cool in a buggy. Help!!!!

Is the buggy vented at all? Other thing to check is the MMM's fan actually working??

Its not vented other than the stock vents on the E body. Yes the fan is working on the ESC. I'm pretty new to 1/8 so I'm thinking its just something to do with gearing.

Couple things you could look at.....try reaming some holes front and back for some airflow and check your driveline for any binding/dragging by removing the pinion and rolling it back and forth.

Also, what is your timing set at in Castle Link? The 1/8 scale motors generally dont require any timing advance and of course, if you have added some, that will create heat. You could even tone down (re: up) your punch control, that may help.

One more thing....since your ESC runs hot, what are the specs of your battery?

run the car without cover. let the air go inside. I use to run my vorza flux hp without the cover, but one time I put it on, the motor and the battery gets extreme hot.

That's not really a solution.

Basically a 2200kv motor is wasted in a 4s setup buggy. Way too much motor. I run the same motor in my 8ight, have it dialed back to 85% EPA and running a 14T pinion. I can get away with it, since it's very cool over here. ESC barely gets hot, and motor reaches 150f, when it's at its hottest. Something around 1700-1900kv is better suited for 4s, and a range of 16-18T pinions.

Why would you dial back the EPA rather than gearing it correctly ?

ESC's do not like having the EPA dialed back, they work better when WOT = 100% duty cycle


No reason why the 2200 shouldnt be effective with his setup

I would check the drivetrain for binding etc...

What ESC settings and battery are you using ?

Do you know what speed you are geared for ?

You may even be under-geared

Well don't have pinions small enough for correct gearing, and don't have funds for another motor just yet. A 1700kv motor is in the cards however.

yea a 2200kv MMM is to much for a buggy for sure thats luckily why your esc cut off from heat.

And using a 4c lipo will make it worse.

The 2200kv motor is only for a 1/8 e truggy.

like others were saying a 1700-1900 kv motor with 4c lipo is for a E-buggy.

if you like the castle motor there is a 2250kv motor im pretty sure its for buggys .
look into the tacon motors from hobbypartz.com or tengery motors from hobbyking .

I have an 8 2.0 with a tekno conversion kit and the same 2200 & esc geared at 48/15 running a 4s and has never temped over 140. I know it is listed as a truggy combo but it does great in my buggy. Fan kicks on at 150, ive never seen mine run. All settings are at default. I have been so happy with it I havent bothered changing anything. Running the stock E body.

same here , no issues at all, it loves to be geared up. i had a heat issue when i first got it and the fan was bad on the ESC. wired up a new fan cut some vent holes in the body and now it never gets over 130 ish. even if it is the "wrong " motor , its meant for a bigger heavier truck on 4s+ shouldnt have any issues with a buggy for sure.

I run factory settings in the ESC. No drag brake.

I'm have 2 bodies so I might hack one up a bit to get some airflow.

I sure hope I can make this work though, the buggy friggin rips. I never ran 1/8 scale until about a month ago and I havent lost a race yet with it (ok...lost one race to casey Peck but I actually hung with him for a while!!!).

Timing needs to backed off to 0. Default is 10. 16 or 17 t pinion is what I run. Have two small cutouts in rc8e body. Temps after 15 mins around 150 motor, less than 150 on esc. My guess is you have some binding in the drivetrain.
