Can a sensored brushless overheat?

Can a sensored brushless overheat?
I took my 10.5T novak setup for a run today, and it seemed to get pretty warm. My gear ratio is set to novak's ideal 5.5:1 (its actually 5.56:1).
The thing is, I dont have a temp gun or anything to measure it with. So i was hoping that the built in "thermal protection" will shut the motor off in the case of it getting to hot.
Is that right?

Yes there is... Novak have a chart on their site that lists the FDR target of 5.5:1 for the 10.5T motors...
Here
http://www.teamnovak.com/tech_info/b...r_gearing.html
And a guide using info for many manufacturers here
http://www.comeseethis.com/gearing/Default.aspx
So the question is more, can a sensored motor that is with an esc with thermal protection overheat?
So far I have a yes and a no so what is it?

If novak knew what they were talking about now days they would be still holding more market share...
The optimum ratio is dependant on track size, vehical weight, voltage, & motor.
Please DO NOT take any thing for fact on a chart other than a part number....
Yes & No... Novak Motors have temp sensors in them, Novak ESC's use them.
Do Novak Motors burn up? yes
but not a offten as their ESC's do.

Our Havoc 1S, 2S and 3S systems have the motor temp sensors engaged when used as a system. However, when not using these escs, our motors do not shut off if you are over-gearing them or using them with improperly adjusted timing/boost escs. You can always contact [email protected] for assistance with Novak products.

What are you running this in? I like Novak and have not problems with their esc's or motors. Their gearing charts/recommendations are not the best I've seen though. Everybody likes to jump on Novak when they have an esc or motor go up, truth is every brand has bad apples. They just keep it quiet when it's their brand so they can keep talking smart. I've seen Tekin's, LRP's and Novak's have issues. Buy what you like, they all work.

It's a havoc 2s esc with the ss pro 10.5t. It's the combo pack. I've got it in my rtr kyosho tf-5 shaft drive tc. Probably more power then I should put through that chassis... But I couldn't bring myself to spend the same money on the 17.5. . The esc doesn't feel hot, nor does the lipo, I guess I'm just being paranoid, I'm going to order a temp gun, and a new spur and a bunch of pinions to give me a better range of gearing choices at the track. And while I'm ordering all that it can't hurt to grab a fan for the esc.
