Yes, I had a V1 Plutonium a year back that was like that. You definitely want to re-shim the rotor prior to running it.

I opened it and all that's in it is a rubber o-ring and no shims.
Is this something new as far as shimming rotors?

The motors don't drive themselves.

The D3.5s don't seem any better than anything else. In fact, a friend of mine has one from Express and my Plutonium is easily faster. He is still losing ground to me at the end of the straight.

The D3.5s don't dominate here in SoCal like they seem to in other places and don't seem to perform better or win anymore than anything else.

I don't know if I lucked out, but my Plutonium 17.5 is really fast everywhere with the larger rotor. I much prefer it over the stock because (For me) it is faster everywhere on the tracks that I frequent.

My 13.5 is a bit different than the 17.5 as it doesn't perform well at all with the larger rotor and is much faster with the stock. It is definitely one of the fastest 13.5s available.

Yea, this is interesting. I've currently got two Plutoniums, a v1 and v2 and both of them have the O-ring on them. They also have no rotor play at all.

AFAIK, the team manager, who happens to live nearby and I race with regularly, always ends up shimming the motor and removing the o-ring. A little play is certainly needed. Why they are originally built with the o-ring, I don't know. I'm pretty sure he typically puts a shim on top of the rotor, and no shims near the bottom of the can.

What shims does he use? Just normal metallic shims like other motors?

The Team Powers V1 is a much better all around motor, this my opinion, not here to argue. You can Gear the TP motor higher with less temp increase than the D3.5, which keeps them on an equal playing field as far as speed goes. The one thing I can tell you, in South Florida where I race, temperature is everything. The TP motor runs considerably cooler than the D3.5 or any other motor on the market. At Nationals this year, I think I was the only one in the 17.5 AMain running something other than the Kill Shot and I was only getting up to 165*-170*. The Kill Shots were in the 230-240 range, they were no faster than I was speed wise, they were just better drivers.

Thanks for the feed back.
I'll open it and reshim it removing the o-ring.

I'm curious, so compared to a d3.5 17.5, in blinky mode, what FDR are people running w/ the stock rotor version 2, let's say on a 90ft carpet track, and also keeping their motors cool enough to run effective? 3.5, 3.4, 3.3 ish?

So I'm trying to reshim it... but none of the shims I can salvage from other motors seem to fit. They're all too small.

The hole is too small? That's odd, all shafts should be the same diameter.
