Default Team Checkpoint soldering station

looks just like a hakko.
is it?

its 79bucks at tower and i have a 20 dollar off coupon so its 60 shipped.
seems like a fair price..
i dont solder everyday but my 10 dollar walmart iron is super slow to heat and i seem to be melting the tips??

anyone have this station? or have any thoughts about it?
thanks

From what I've read, that is a Hakko - they make it for Team Ckpt.....

I have the Hakko 936 - bought before the TC station came out. Don't see how you can go wrong with it, prob be the last iron you'll ever buy.

what temp do you typically use for soldering deans and leads to motors?
ive never had to chose a temp before.. it was either on or off

I use a temp right around 750 degrees and the chisel tip for deans and motor wires. Make sure you're using a good 60/40 rosin core flux solder AND additional rosin flux in either paste or liquid form.

Thumbs down

I was bouncing between getting a Hakko, and this one, opted for this one.

Problem #1 - Took the first one out of the box, plugged it in, and nothing. Seems the outlet plug coming out of the station is garbage. Wiggle the cord around and got intermittent power. Tried tightening the little prongs, nothing.

Solution - sent it back, had to order a 2nd one so I didn't have to wait for warranty. Need to get some work done to race this weekend.

Problem #2 - Received my 2nd station yesterday, fired it up as soon as I got home, and I have power, ...............Wait, too much power.
After having the iron on for 10 minutes or so, the end was loose. Strange, so I tightened it back up, tried soldering again, and my 800 degree soldering end pops right out of the handle.(It's conveniently spring loaded to create a scorching projectile) Seems the 4 little plastic knobs that hold the iron onto the threaded end of the handle melted right off.

NOW WHAT??? I managed to get one bullet connector on some 10 awg wire, and that was it. Couldn't get my RX-8 soldered up AGAIN!!!

I do NOT recommend this piece of crap. Looks like a cheapo 60 watt from Radio Shack to the rescue.

One positive, they are sending out a free replacement, we'll see how that holds up.

I ran a screw through it last night to hold it in place, seems to work, but it doesn't have the power to solder up an RX-8. Time to try different types of solder. 95/5 electric solder does NOT work.
