Default airline travel with NiMH batteries

What state of charge should NiMH batteries be in when I pack them for a trip?

flat? 10% charge? 50% charge?

They're going into the checked luggage case, so I guess would be subject to some mighty cold temperatures in the air.

Anyone with the relevant experience can advise me on this?

How do store them normaly? Should be fine that way. Mine are always in a foam padded case when I take them to the track, I would think the foam would be enough insulation to prevent any problems on a few hour flight.

AA's or sub-c's?

AA's I'd pack fully charged...

Normal battery packs... probably about 25% so they could be balanced quickly before recharging.
