AFAIK the only difference is the SPM3140 can run DSM2 receivers but still on the DSM1 frame rate. Not sure if it uses an improved roller
Frame rate has nothing to do with DSM1 or DSM2 FWIW

If your radio doesn't have the marine protocols in it then you do not want to use it in a boat. There's a reason why Spektrum developed both the marine protocol and the MR3000 receiver.

do we know the reason or what would happen. its the only radio i know of which needs a special marine reciever. are there other radios like this?

Can you elaborate on the differences between DSM1 and DSM2? According to the Spektrum site:

"In addition to unparalleled freedom and interference protection, patent pending DSM2 has a faster response time than any other spread spectrum or PPM system"

It is to my understanding that response time is based on frame rate

Water is a unique beast and we simply have found that there can be issues and do not recommend a non-marine equipped radio and receiver in that application.

There's much more to the response picture than just frame rate. Think of frame rate like this: The faster the frame rate the more precisely the servos and esc's will follow your input via the wheel or trigger. Latency, resolution, your electronics and much more all combine to paint the full picture.

Hey RCGaryK,

I race 1/8 buggy, and therefore only need 2 channels (plus a place to plug in a transponder).

Aside from the 3rd channel and the extra receiver, is the DX3S exactly the same as the DX2S in terms of function/features?

Looks to me like the DX2S would be the way to go if you only need 2 channels, right?

Thanks

I had a dx-2s and got a dx-3swhat a waste of money! the dx3.0 is cheaply made and breaks easy. have had it sent in 2 different times. the 2s held up a lot better. The 3s needs to go back for the antenna this time.

The DX3S has twice the model memory (10 vs 5), throttle punch, the extra receiver as noted and other than that about the same.

Thanks. Sorry, but what's throttle punch? I couldn't find a description of this.
