Default Charger for NiMH and Lipo

Hi,

I'm starting with racing electro touring cars after I have raced 1:10 200mm nitro for two years.

I'm planning to compete in club races and later, maybe next summer I'm able to compete in some national races.

I have to following "problem".

In the Netherlands we are not allowed to use LiPo batteries in the competition. But I heard that there's a good chance that this will happen in near future.

I have to buy a new charger and now I want to buy one which is good for both NiMH and LiPo batteries. (taking in account future changes to the racing rules) I know that there are a lot of chargers which can charge LiPo's and NiMH but which charger works best?

As I saw that a lot of you people on this forum are using LiPo's I thought you guys would know.

Pleased to hear your opinion.

greetz.

Alot of people on the forums here and alot of people here at my local club races run the Duratrax ICE. I have never heard a complaint about it and it will charge any battery.

I personally use the Orion Advantage Advanced Charger. I have had no issues with it, and it too will charge any battery.

You can't go wrong with either.

One more thing, you will need a power supply for those charger's.

I don't know what you budget is, but the Bantam BC-6 is as nice a charger as you'll find anywhere.

+1 on ice, perfect charger, nothing confusing at all

and the ofna power converter is also a great converter

just dont tap it, or else the cord jiggles and shuts it off

I use an ICE as well. So far it has worked very well and does a very nice job on my Nimh's and lipo. The only problem i've had with it so far was one of the buttons going out but we had it sent in and Duratraxx fixed it for free.

I've used an Ice for 4 yrs and started using a Hyperion 0610INet late last year. The Hyperion lacks a true discharging or cycling function like the Ice has, but includes a built in lipo balancer and will charge a123s (they need a different charing protocol than Lipo). You'll need a separate balancer to balance lipos using the Ice.

Both will do NiMH, NiCd etc. Both are DC chargers and need a power supply. Both are great chargers and depending on your needs, either would do an excellent job.

Thanks for your answers, will consider buying a ICE.

I also looked at Much More chargers.

Like the CTX-Cell master platinum.

In the description section of this charger following is stated:

-Li-Ion & Polymer charge upto 11.1V (3cell), 1A charge, discharge.

What does this mean? 1A charge is not that fast right?

Maybe it's a stupid question, but I have to learn a lot about electronics and charging of batteries.

Thanks

If you do get a chance to go LIPO, just be careful with SOME chargers that will do both.

Some chargers WILL charge a LIPO if left in NiMh mode, but a LIPO doesn't stop charging (like a NiMh will when it's reaches it's peak) and if the charger is doing a LIPO in NIMH mode, they can damage the packs, and/or even may catch fire.

Always make sure to check your settings, and NEVER leave un attended.

Correct, 1A is not that fast of a charge - but its also relative - if lipo is 1000mah, that would be a normal 1C charge, if its a 5000mah lipo, charging at that rate would take a while, it would be slow. You're also limited to only 2S and 3S lipos with that charger and with the low fixed charge rate thats too much of a compromise to be a good charger. Ice will do up to 4S and charges up to 8amps and disch at 10amps and will charge at optimum rate for batt capacity.
