Default On Road Track Building

My club is aboout to build a permanent track using its existing lay-out and we would like to know if some one out there could help point us in the right direction to find out minimum trck specifications for IFMAR or national and state championship.

We are thinking of a 5 meter wide track with some banked corners, I have not seen this done on any track that I have come across on the net.

Any help would be appreciated.

I do not know the whole spec's of building a track to IFMAR or National's and State Champs, wish you luck.

There is this track that I go to in Antioch, Ca., The track is permanent, with banked corners, there is some pic's that you can look at, here's the website: www.deltarc.com go to view track.
The banked corners are for the oval's, I think their about 5 to 7 degree banks.

oh ok. nice layout. I just figured Id ask though. Really there are a few regulations regarding track building, Id talk to IFMAR and your national RC governing body about it

Minimum width from memory is 4 metres.
and then down the straight it is 4 metres, but be advised, 6 metres across is good on the straights to give more room when the big drag comes on out of last corner.

also, u should run a couple of corners with Positive comber on them
(Sloped into the centre) and then run 1 or 2 with about 4 or 5 degree of negative camber (Sloped to the outside)
this way if u dive in to fast in the neg camber corners, u r more then likely to end up out in the grass. plus it helps water drain off having it sloped.

Per ROAR/IFMAR rules the minimum lane width varies for each class. but maybe this will help. I know because i've been checking on this for our facility here in the states

12th scale - min. 6 ft. continious
sedan EP - min 8ft continious (indoor)/min. 10ft (outdoor)
sedan GP - min 10ft
1/8" - min. 12ft.

these are for onroad only. not sure about offroad, but you don't care right? hope this helps. good luck.

Why do people insist on using Imperial measurements, like come on, we are in the 21st century and 9/10 of the world use metric.

Well, around here,
between Maine and Florida,
Florida to Washington,
and Washington to Texas,
We call 12 inches a foot!

cms, metres and kilometres are metric, 9/10 of the world use it

Thanks again for the track details
and I dont care about what measurements you use as I can use a calculator and do conversions.
Some people forget that you use what you have in the country you are in, if I want the info its upto me to do the conversion to my countries standard of measuring.

Thanks again for the info please keep it coming.

I'll assume you're talking about building a track outdoors. My tips would be more practical than regulation related ...

Before you lay down any asphalt or concrete, be sure you have taken water drainage into consideration. If you have banked curves (esp positive camber) that would drain water into the infield, dig some trenches and lay in some type of french drain pipe (pipe with holes in it) to get the water away from the track area [ie, from the infield under the track and way out away from the track]. You don't want seasonal lakes forming in the infield. When trenching make sure the trenches and drain pipes run downhill A good rule of thumb would be 4" slope per every 12 feet of drain pipe, then backfill the trench with gravel.

If you decide to put in some positive camber banked corners, be sure the driver's stand is high enough and placed right for the drivers to see their cars in those potentially blind corners. Ask the shortest guy in the club to check it out, and not the tallest.

Thanks for the good tip on drainage
I finaly found the web site area for IFMAR worlds track specs which has given us a few things to change on our track.
The guts of the specs are
min 4.5 mtrs wide to a max of 6.5 wide
min length of 250 mtrs prefered 280-300mtrs
min 10mtrs from start to first corner.
drivers stand min 2.5mtrs high.

Our track needs another 30-50mtrs in length and some of that extra length needs to be in the start straight as we dont have a 10mtr lead tot he first corner.

Thanks again
