Yea, we will be able to take mail in payments. That shouldn't be an issue, since no processing is really involved.

So to access this forum in the future, I have to pay? Like SGRID?

No, you don't have to pay... If you want "more bells and whistles" then you would pay...

No, You do not HAVE to pay to access the forum in the future.

However, It is an option to get some more goodies. Those include the following:

- Access to a members-only "chat" forum
- Access to colors and links in their signature
- A special tag whenever they post
- Special deals from time to time from our partners
- A "members only" newsletter beginning in July
- An exclusive annual gift from the site, i.e. decals or a T-shirt
- More stuff as we think of it =)

Please don`t make this site like the Starting Grid ...

I would never return if it became like that site...

When I scroll through threads these days I see a lot of links in sigs to things for sale, eBay auctions, peoples' online stores, and so on. It's not so much the links I mind, it's that some people--a minority, for sure--try to cram as much self-serving stuff in there as they can.

This is sort of a touchy subject for some, for sure. It's kind of a double-edged thing. I don't expect subscription revenue to support the site, in fact I suspect we'll probably get about 100 helpful people and that's about it. I could be very wrong, but that's my gut feeling. If we do make ads an opt-out type of thing for subscribers, it really risks upsetting the advertisers who by and large support the site. If it weren't for them, we wouldn't be here.

On the flip side, I am not completely opposed to it either. I suspect there will be so few subscribers that it won't particularly impact the ads themselves. I would need to re-code the new templates based on usergroup selection which would be a somewhat lengthy task.

In other words, I won't say yes but I won't say no either. Let me give it some thought and see how things flesh out in the first few weeks here.

Regarding the clicking of ads, I'm actually a firm believer that the most "value" in a web advertisement is from people seeing it, not necessarily from clicking on it. An RC company will spend $1000 a month for a page in a magazine that is often nothing more than a logo and a photo of a product. They hope that 30 or 40 or 50 thousand people will see their logo and remember it the next time they are at a store and making a buying decision. The focus on web banners is always conversions on the click-through to retail stores, which is certainly valuable... but I think a greater value just comes from getting a company some exposure.
Thanks for the reply. The opt out thing would only be for places where it is more important that my screen remain discreet. It's pretty funny that I don't mind seeing advertising for RC stuff, but I use Tivo to skip all the advertising while watching TV.

As for the signature, I was just trying to figure out if I wanted to save my sig, or if it wouldn't be allowed in the new software. I like to use my sig to inform people about the upcoming races locally to me. I know that I hardly ever visit the racing forum and see racing announcements from other tracks. I can't imagine that other people may have the same browsing habits.

The advertisements and their placement in the upgrade are very similar to the way they are handled today. Non distributive, non intrusive, and on-target. There are no pop up, pop under, porn, or other type of adverts that are most commonly hated on the internet. We've all been to "those" sites where the adverts become the focus more then the site itself. Not here.

For all intensive purposes, the advertisements should not be an issue unless they are a problem for you today. If that's the case, let us know - but this site is *very* light on adverts and focused primarily on the end-user experience more then anything else. And we hope with this upgrade to enhance experience!

I know almost nothing about computers so at the risk of sounding stupid, does deleting the signatures delete it from every section of rctech eg racing forums?

That is correct - and why it's important everyone back theirs up.

Well, while a very new user of this forum, I have already made several purchases, and figure I saved quite a bit over buying from Ebay or other sources.

I have found a LOT of helpful advice, and expect to get a lot more. I know the upgrades in software you speak of, and I can say I beleive its a VERY good idea. Just the search features alone make it a worthwhile upgrade.

I figure when you get upgraded and have a member sign up, I would love to throw in my 3 bucks a month. Always happy to support forums I really like.

Oh, and update the front page more often. I see all kinds of features on the front page that are way underutilized. IMHO that is.

Keep on keeping on,
Jimmy

Never heard of Firefox? Spellcheck built right into the browser.

Is there a spell checker by any chance????
