Here's a little article I did a few years ago - http://www.oople.com/rc/photos/artic...to1/index.html - probably a bit basic but I'd not been photographing too long at that point.

In terms of shutter speed then yes just bump the iso up. A faster lens (in terms of aperture) will only be faster if you actually use the big aperture, and the trade-off is shallower depth of field which may/may not be what you want.

Indoors I'd say a fast lens is essential - but outdoors you can use anything for action shots unless the weather is really terrible.

I use my 70-200 f2.8L IS alot. But its a $1600.00 lens.
Your gonna pay a good amount of money for any L lens, so prepare for it. haha

hey guys i was so excited when i saw this thread i thought i was going to have to go into my dslr endeavor alone but im glad i found you guys...... so my question is, im looking to get a dslr for rc and family. Ive been doing a lot of research online and this will be my first dslr. So if any one can give me some some insight on these cameras im looking at it would be very helpful(pros&cons)... my initial thought was to go with the big name Nikon d3000 but after checking website after website im looking at the pentax K-x looks like a great entry level camera with higher grade options such as "live view" and 720p hd recording among other things which the nikon doesnt have until you get to the d5000 and a $800 price tag. Im looking at spending around 500 to 650 on a good beginner set up. any info would be great thanks!

Do you have any friends or family with DSLR cameras?
I would personally go with what ever brand your friends/family might have, that way you can borrow gear. (believe me this is helpful).

Another thing is availability on accessories and parts, Pentex is not a popular DSLR brand and that's going to make finding parts harder (lenses, etc).

Stick with Canon and Nikon. I know a couple people who went Minolta and pentex, a few months later they sold everything to go Canon/Nikon. So save the time and headaches and get one of those up front. Plus the community is much larger for those brands, so if you have problems or questions, finding some one to answer them for you is easier.

650.00 is going to be a bit tough on finding a DSLR with Video.
But check out the Canon T1i, its 750.00 for the kit (with lens).

If you don't care about doing video, than theres a few cameras you can check out. Maybe even a Pre-owned on?

Be do some research on the video function first, its primary manual focus which is a pain. I have a Canon 5D Mark II, and i play with the video often, its no that easy.

Good luck, let me know if you have any other questions.

No problem. Your gonna love it. Just take your time and learn your camera. And a bit of advance, read the manual. You will be surprised at how informative it is.

Ive only been shooting RC's for a couple months and even then i dont get to shoot it as much as i like. But check out my website www.TomJanz.com and you will find a few galleries i've done.

I found out that Pentax K20D is a great camera, it's one of the cameras that can be used in dust an rain with no problem. and it has as good picture quality as Nikon an Canon.
I use a Sigma EX series 70-200mm f2.8 for most of my shots
