Planning on going to the track and racing with it or just playing around with it.

If going to the track I'd look into getting a tekno sct410 or a losi scte

If just playing around with look into a traxxas slash 4x4. Pretty much all hobby shops are going to stock the slash parts and I'm sure you can find one here for sale

If you are planning on racing, check out what classes are actually run. 4x4 SC is a modified class. Not sure that's the best place to start. 2wd SC may be a better choice.

I have a brand new in the box Pro-Line Pro2 short course truck up for sale. All brand new with the exception of the rubber tires. The stock rubber was swapped for J-Concepts Barcodes in green (soft) compound and are mounted on the stock rims. Tires are lightly used. Everything else is untouched in the bag/box and body and decals also untouched. Asking $325 for the whole package.

I have a Slash 4x4 complete rtr package with batteries and charger on craigslist. I was going to post it on here but my computer is torn apart at the moment and its kinda hard to post pictures with my phone. Here is a link with pictures and shipping wouldn't be much more.http://grandisland.craigslist.org/tag/4642067366.html

I have a Losi SCTE for sale. I might have a couple sets of tires and some spare parts as well. I already sold the Speed control out of it but I can pull one out of my ebuggy to make it artr for $300.

For a kid starting out you can't beat the slash4x4 due to it being cheap (get one used and save 50%) and parts availability is usually excellent. if you have a local hobby shop, see what they have/recommend - most of them have almost every part for a handful of traxxas vehicles.
Later if he wants to actually complete he may have to get something else (like an SCTE- which is a better vehicle, but less parts availability depending on your location), but the slash is great to fool around with to see if he's really interested in the hobby at least.
Or better yet, you could get him the slash, and the SCTE for you. :-)

The best thing is search these for sale threads, you can score some thing that's inexpensive and RTR. Get an SC.10 parts are inexpensive and you always find someone unloading parts somewhere. This ways it's inexpensive to start and you can upgrade as your son progresses.

I have an sc10.2 it's brushless right now but I could make it brushed if you'd like.
