Default Alternative Liquid Mask Films

Has anyone tried the 3M Overspray masking film? It is water based. I have talked with a rep at 3M and told him what I would use it for. He told me that it does dry clear and peels off. The only thing that he's not sure of is whether it would stain the Lexan or not. I was thinking of trying it for the simple fact that its cheaper that Dively's or Parma. Think about it if you paint A LOT of bodies and go through LMF like I do it would pay off quickly. Dively's is now up to $27 for a 32 oz. bottle. Buy 2 of those and you've paid for a gallon of the 3M. I just wish that they sold it in smaller containers than the gallon size so I could try it out.

Here's a little more info on it. Let me know what you experienced guys think.

hey that might be a good idea you can maybe buy a small bottle and test it out on a piece of lexan and see if it stains. il try to find a small bottle and try it. maybe home depot or lowes sells it.

I'm sure that they do sell it there because I've seen it used for masking around windows for paint. I'll look into it and see if they may have it on their website.

You would think that if it would stain lexan then it would stain vinyl windows as well, I would like to know how it cuts and it cuts stay open with a coat of paint on them.

I might have to break down and buy a gallon of the stuff. I found it on Amazon for $20 +shipping. It might be worth the gamble.

I seriously doubt it will stain Lexan. I tried to dye a wing one time and it would barely take the dye, I had to boil it for hours and it came out very light. Lexan is some tough sh1t!

I know Grainger Supply keeps it in stock too. I assume you race at Redline Raceway 1967 rs?

Also after reading all the specs on the stuff it sounds like you wouldn't want to leave it on the body for too long. I would think that it would be inert after it dries. Apparently not....lol

I forgot to mention something. There are 2 types of the Overspray Mask Liquid. There's wet and dry. YOU MUST specify dry when ordering. The other doesn't dry totally. It dries to a tacky film so that it can "grab' dust and dirt.

Yes, I do race at Redline. I have seen you there a few times but it has been some time ago.

The gallon did not make the truck today, so next tuesday. I might check some other places to see if they have it. The stuff they are shipping up is the dry, I asked for it by part number.

Well I shot a body with this stuff. It sprays nice, I used my touch-up gun that normaly plugs up when using faskmask. I layed down 3 heavy coats, I should have waited more time between coats because a lot of it ran to the botton of the body. I pulled a small test patch from a part that was dry and it looks like this will work. When dry it is not rubbery like fastmask it is more like plastic, it is a lot like the overspray coating that comes on the outside of bodies. I will let it dry overnight and see how it cuts on Sat.
