I have painted a few bodies so far, all rattle can. The little cans you buy at the hobby store don't last long and are not cheap. I see myself painting a lot of bodies in the future.
So in the long run, is airbrushing cheaper per body?
I know there is an initial dump for equipment, but after that what more are your costs?
I'm considering air brushing because I can and will use it for a lot more than just RC bodies. Where the cans of RC spray paint are really only good for bodies unless you like using expensive spray paint to tag free way signs.
Actually, airbrushing will end up being more expensive. The smaller Pactra jars are less expensive then the spray cans, but also don't go very far and require reducer/thinner for spraying and clean up. You will need to maintain a compressor, obviously the airbrush and supplies that go along with their use. I regularly clean my Iwata HP-C with acetone and then flush it with auto air restorer. Then it gets a squirt of WD-40 in the control mechanisms before being put up for a couple days while I work on masking, cutting, etc.
I actually still use spray cans where it saves time and doesn't detract from the work. It is great for backing metallic colors using silver and flourescents with white, etc. This also means I buy silver and white 6 cans(2 sleeves) at a time, lol.
Good luck with the painting!

Pakk, I order thru my LHS, JR Hobbies in Kissimmee, Fl. They order me 3 at a time in the cardboard sleeve Pactra sells them in, so I don't clear out their paint rack. Since I usually buy $100 or so in paint at a time, both jars and cans.
The jars come in sleeves of 6, but I only order six at a time of true blue, black, orange and yellow. I usually buy two at a time of jars for most other colors.

I currently own a Iwata eclipse with a .35 needle and a Iwata revolution with a .5 needle. I want to get a cheap airbrush that will spray the glitter paints (i.e. Faskolor Fastkote with Glitter). What is gonna be a decent airbrush that is cheap? Thanks.

I use a paasche H with a lg tip it seems to be the only one to work for me without cloging the tip.

I second the Paasche H for this. I only use all my Iwata brushes for all details, shading etc, but the old Paasche H is a diehard airbrush that I use for all my large coats back coats as well as glitter. I even have another H that I use to spray liquid mask through!
Just airbrushed my first body and have a couple of questions. I really need to work on my pinstripes. Next one won't have any just to make it easier and work on a couple of other issues.
How thick should I be spraying the paint on? I layered on 3 coats of faspearl blue, tried to back it with black along an edge for some depth and then backed with white. Looks like I sprayed it on too thick as the black and white didn't change the paint any. Should it be fairly translucent before I back it?
This should get me to 10 posts and I'll post pics in the Your Custom Paintjobs thread.
Question guys, I've been asked to paint an already painted body. The customer wants the body painted on the outside with his company logos to be used as a display only body. Is there anyway to remove and reuse the headlight and grill decals? Tried to soak in water but have'nt had any luck with that. Any ideas?
Thanks
Chris

If it is the glue resedue then use rubber cement thinner. That is what I use.

I am not sure on that part , I have never tried to take them off before with out them ripping . Maybe try a hair dryer to warm the glue up to make it soft so it comes off , just an idea never tried it before.
