Was the one from harbor freight a Campbel Hausfield? Mine died after 1 year of random use...That's AFTER draining the air every time I used it and all. It was loud as hell...not just loud: ear piercing loud.

I went to Sears after that one died and got a Craftsman 125PSI 3/4 HP 4 gallon compressor. It makes a much more mellow sound and I love it. It was at a decent price too: $105 when I got it.

I know you're looking for a compressor without a reserve...but I recommend one for sure.

This is what I use. Can't even hear it run. All you hear is a click when it turns on and off. Not cheap but I managed to pick one up off Ebay for about 200.00.

This may be a good choice..Might check reviews on it but usually anything Silentaire makes is good.

I use this one....

http://www.dickblick.com/products/pa...r-compressors/

ebay $127

http://cgi.ebay.com/Paasche-Airbrush...item48384d6710

added a filter regulator and it works fine up to 35psi...plenty for airbrushing what I do. downside is that without a tank, it runs constantly, but it's not too loud for indoor use. A tank would be nice.

The Grex item you linked looks to be similar to the D500 in operating principle, but comes with filter-reg and is dressed nicer.

I use this. I can spray for 1/2 hr at least before it kicks in. It's not all that loud either. I spray in the basement and even if my 3 month old daughter falls asleep in the living room right above me, it does not wake her up.

I also use a couple of these.
