This is a WIP so please just be nice. I had tape issues so I know about the bleed over. It is my first car body in years. Also My wife scrap books and I will tell you a cricket is a great machine for all your decal and masking needs.

I have an old Bolink decal set to do this car. I'm thinking of using McAllister Mustang.

There is some buzz about HPI making a new Pontiac Firebird Trans Am body. Here's a sneak-peak photo...

Although the nose style is circa 1978 (Trans Am Special Edition "Smokey and the Bandit") there is hope, since it is HPI after all, that the authorities who keep the U.S. VTA rules will allow this new HPI body on the official list.

As sweet as that is, it would never be legal for USVTA for a few reasons. The main one being that the Trans Am never raced in the Trans Am series, because it wasn't legal(engine too big). I love this body though and will probably buy a case of them.

What about the 1970 Firebird TransAm, BFG Tirebird # 92!!!!! Google vintage Transam you'll find it. I believe it did win one race. I believe it ran a destroked big block 303ci or something lke that. Check it out!! Hve fun!!!! It still races in VTA, owned by Bruce Canepa.

Just looked and the 77/78 trans am was available with the 400. Your right. too big. it wasn't until 80 or 81 the base engine dropped to a 301. The regular firebirds engine was small enough though.

At any rate this body should not be allowed unless you really want to open the flood gates for the 1973 pantera and corvette. you might as well let the 80s mustangs and camaros run as well.

I beg to differ with you JCarr. If you look at the U.S. Trans Am Series Roster at this web page -->http://www.trans-amseries.com/Roster.html, you will find at least 2 Pontiac Firebirds: William Connor drove the #8 - 1970 Pontiac Firebird and Bruce Canepa drove the #92 1970 Pontiac Firebird.

Think he was referring to the 77/78 trans am and not the 70. The 67-72 Firebird is where hpi should have put their efforts. that and a 67-69 cougar.

Sorry but you have been misinformed. In 1968-1969, the Pontiac Trans Am was allowed to run with 302 Chevrolet motors because all Pontiac Firebirds build in Canada for Canadian sales had Chevrolet engines in them. In 1970 when SCCA changed the rules (mainly for Chrysler's benefit), both Dodge/Plymouth & most GM cars built custom 305 (5 liters) engine for competition. Only Ford stuck with the 302 & AMC already had the 304 they could keep running.

I don't think anyone is arguing that the early birds were not a big part of the trans am series, sure they were. That's why there is a demand for 67-72 Firebird bodies that hpi should have released. however the 77/78 body style just released by hpi was not and thus should not be a vta legal body. In fact the only reason Chevrolet built the 302 you referred to was so they could run it in trans am.
