There should be no gap at all when its compressed and on the piston. A little bit on the inside where it sits with the pin.

Default Piston Ring GAP ...

Hi -
Only new here, but a retired motor mech, and I can tell you if you have NO GAP in a compressed piston ring in any internal combustion enging you are looking for trouble when the engine gets up to operating temperarure - as Metal expands when heated and with NO gap things can go bad in a very short space of time - namely a Siezure , A broken ring and subsequently a Scored and damaged cylinder bore ....

So, Not a good idea to have no gap at all - I always refer to manufacturers specifications when enging rebuilding as they are usually fairly correct with their spec's OR if you can't obtain the specifications of the manufacturer then seek information from similar makes of engine etc as to what you are using ....

If that is not an option then talk to the person who is going to do the engineering side of the rebuild - Engine Rebuild Shop - Engineering Shop - as these guys are doing this for a living and won't steer you wrong either.

I hope this information has been of a help to you & others ...

Regards -
Greg
