977e
Hello,
I just purchased the Serpent 977e. Has anyone else built one yet?
I am specifically inquiring about recommendations for the electrics required to build it:
Motor
ESC
servo
batteries

I've been looking at it. I had the 977 nitro and if the 977e handles anywhere near the nitro version with an electric power plant, then that thing will be a hell of a car.
If I were running it I would drop a Poseidon 1717 2200kv motor on 2 6s SMC 3200mah packs gearing as close to 1:1 as possible and a kotronics aviation ESC. That set up alone will have you around 130mph! —and thats low balling it!
One doesn't need to be this extreme though!

Don't want it to be that fast. They say in the literature to use qty 2 3S battery packs. I would want to be competitive with a 977 gas car.

Serpent advertises 2000Kv, but I'm not sure whether that is considered a limit or not. With Tekin, one can get up to 2650Kv. Not only thast, but there are buggy and truggy motors. Which one would be best suited, I wonder?

I am going to contact serpent directly to get their recommendation for the electrics. I will pass on the info.

I would be tempted to use a Turnigy Trackstar 1900 or 2100 kv sensored 1/8th motor, on 6S. I have been using their 2400 kv motor on 4S in my Cobra GTe onroad car all summer and it works great. I'd still use an RX8 Gen2 esc. The other key to 1/8th electric onroad is FANS....lots of FANS. I have a Yeah Racing clamp on motor heatsink with two WTF 30mm fans on it, and a 30mm WTF fan on top of the RX8, as well as the stock RX8 fan set to run all the time. Depending on your grip levels, turn the current limiting in the RX8 WAAAAYY down. I have mine down to 25, and I can still light up all four tires on my GT8e car. But the track is not high grip.

Serpent Europe said ; "3S lipo , engine around 2000KV and 1/8 ESC such as Tekin RX8 or T8"

Looking at this car as well I doubt the truer motors will fit or they will hang over the side. I run the rx8 2650 tekin in my gte it's either that or the 2050 the 2200 will hit the steering post up front. These cars are so aerodynamic and you can run the body's so close to the ground I would def. Fan the heck out of and add ventilation to the body.

Hobbyking only rates those motors for 4s though my friend has a 2400 on 5s in a vorza and it's been fine so far.

it would be a bit silly to go over 1900 because the batterys are unlikely to cope with either run time or discharge rate (or be too heavy if they can). or you just dont use full throttle much, but then what is the point.
it uses so much more energy to go just a little faster (drag squares with speed).
you might figure out with some maths or use serpent calculator which they have for download for 977e, the speed you can get out of it.
i think in the other thread its was recommended to me by M7H to use 6S 4500mah and 1900kV.
and the bodies have a lot of drag at high speed (a lot of downforce too) and a lot of airflow underside I dont see why you need a heap of fans - must be inefficient setup or driving if you do.

yeah it looks right on the maths and its also suggested (as tested) in this thread: http://www.rctech.net/forum/electric...ad-car-81.html
the long answer:
ive been running 4S with 2650kV in a 966e for a while and its been great.
to compare this...
4S with 2650kV is: 2650kV X 14.8V = 39220rpm
6S with 1900kV is: 1900kV x 22.2V = 42180rpm
(1900motor on 6cell is more powerful)
Jeff
just want to add this looked like such a nice car i caved in and ordered one..haha...i was going to keep running my 966e which like i said is going very nice. faster with it than i ever was in nitro actually, but thats going back over 10years.
nitro racing was shut down at our venue because of noise and its great to get this class back with these electric versions.
I loved nitro but must say i can focus more on driving and chassis with electric and keep my car in the house

together with a 16 and 17T pinion
16T for big rear tyres, 17 for 72mm and smaller.
The 14 put in the kit, is offcourse a bit on the safe side, for those people who will try bigger kv motors anyway......
Even if you turn of every protection available in the ESC, it still does some sort of Low Voltage cut or something when running it on 6S.....
Maybe now with the use of better batteries, the problem is gone, but I am not sure about that.
I would most certainly NOT recommend to put in a 2650kv from Tekin, because the car will be a rocket then! and not for long I am afraid....
But if you do, be sure to make a video for us!
