Not quite sure how you get an engine to run backwards as your starting method (box, pullstart, rotostart) would automatically get it going in the proper direction. It would have to start and then stop and go the opposite way. Are you sure it is spinning the correct direction when you try to start it, and if it is are you sure your diffs arent in backwards?

Sounds like backward diffs.

It's very possible. I had a XTM .15 engine do this some years back. I don't know exactly how or why it happened but it was rather interesting and it had nothing to do with how the car itself was setup.

its your starter box. You either have it wired backwards or plugged in backwards

Your engine is kicking-back and starting backwards, this happens when your
engine is to rich and/or when you are spinning it to start and does not fire, which it then builds up with unburnt fuel. The piston goes up and since there is
to much fuel, it can not compress completely and fires then shoots the piston
back down. It will run but badly then stall or it might even change to the right
direction.
