It has been said by certain people in certain places that RC clay/dirt oval racing is not popular. Can you folks give me any facts and figures about oval racing? Like where is it the most popular and least popular. What kind of racers are used the most? How many people convert other cars to oval racers?

I just started racing at my local LHS - other than the stock and mod slash class - it's all dirt oval. 10.5 and Losi Slider.
They have an indoor oval (tri oval really) track as well and I would have to imagine that it pulls enough interest to justify the build.
Green Bay - Wisconsin.
I suspect you see more dirt oval racing where full size racing is popular, be it street stocks, IMCA modifieds or midgets. So I would think Midwest and south.
Hmmm that might just be. We just re-opened the Reno-Fernley Raceway oval that's been closed for two years and I don't think there's a lot of interest in it again yet. Maybe that will change by the end of the season. We're right next to California and you'd think that would be popular for every kind of RC racing but it really isn't.
Hey Gary, Im down by Vegas and i dont think there are any ovals down here, Ive heard of a couple in CA but never paid attention until now because i just bought a mini LM. Do they have any tracks at all up in fernley or reno? My buddy lives in fernley so i will prolly make it to RFR while visiting him. Would like to check out some RC tracks while im there too.

That would be cool. When you come up here look me up. We, the Reno Radio Control Association, have a track in Reno that is both off road and oval..kind of a compromise but...in Carson City they now have an off road track and may be putting in an oval and they race touring cars too down there. In Rescue, CA they have an oval and off road track. Prairie City, CA has an off road track. Those are the closest to Fernley. There's a couple of other private tracks that have racing once in a while but nothing scheduled. Very little oval stuff but I for one would like to see it hop.
RFR racing can sometimes be really cool. Sometimes not so good.
Here in TN DO oval is popular.
Biggest class is 1/10 bomber.
Our DO track is right next to our offroad track. Many raced 1/10 gas truck on offroad then the class died. So people converted their gt and gt2 over to DO.
I run 1/8 latemodel.

Ours opened in March they run slash oval, mini late model, and slider.
I've been with a slider since april and no mini late models have been
showing up at all. so its been 3 heats of slider and 2 heats of slash
the last couple of weeks. 4 is plenty in a slider heat, but latley
they have been throwing 6 in a heat that's when it gets ugly.
I live in ky, and reo raceway is just across the bridge.
Our oval is part of the off road track because we don't have the room for separate tracks and it's so dry out here the track surfaces don't get hard packed. If they're watered they get muddy and not watered they just turn to dust. We're working on it though.

Sounds like HARD PACKED is the key oval racing??? Smooth surface no stones? That's not what we have here.
yeah its tuff to run on loose tracks but i have seen it done the rocks and stuff will throw your car out of line and put it where you dont want it and make it tough to race side by side on our track here is a red clay dirt they catch it completely dry and drag it to smooth it out they wet it and drivthe opposite way around to pack it in they do all this before the race and in between every line up restart they will wet it again and run it in it make them super fast my quikest to date lap is 5.039 and this is a good size track
