I am considering purchasing a 1/5 scale FG Formula 1 and would like to get some advice from you.
-I want to get the Sportline F-1 with a G270RC, if i get this car will i be able to race against the drivers that have the standard 26cc engine, like the one that comes in the RTR version of the FG F-1.
-Am i better off getting the RTR Sportline F-1 or the Sportline and purchase my own radio and servos. What is the frequency of the RTR FG F-1 radio and are the servos any good.
-Are there any 1/5 scale onroad tracks in South Jersey & Philadelphia areas? The closest one to me that i know of is 301 in Maryland.
-I am not the best driver, i wonder if i will be allowed to race with the more experienced drivers.
Thank you!

You are getting a FG F1??? I like this guy already!!!!
i also got the sportline, two main reasons, 1 is cheaper than the Comp version and 2 is lighter!!!!!
as far of radios get any 2.4Ghz radio (Futaba 3pks or Spectrum DX-3). make sure is a 3-channel radio.
they only way you will get better is racing against the best drivers, off course you need to practice a lot.
come down to 301 once you get your F1 and we will help you. there are about 5 guys down here that run F1s (including myself) and we have a very good driver from L.I. too. so when he comes down we have 5 to 6 drivers on the track, and i think this season the F1 class is going to grow.

Luis, thank you very much for your help. I will be ordering my F-1 the 2nd week in March. I will post pictures ASAP.
301 Raceway Drivers- 1/5 scale
Will i be able to race with you guys if i get the Zenoah G270RC as oppossed to the standard 26cc engine in the RTR version of the FG F-1. I was reading the ROAR Rules and it calls for 23cc displacement engines for the F-1, does that mean that i need a 23cc engine. I just want to make sure that i get the right engine in the car and not have to spend more money replacing the engine.

Well Marcosmecha,
Welcome to you in advance to world of 1/5 scale formula 1 racing. I hope you are able purchase a formula 1 car for the coming season starting April 2009 here in maryland. my man LuisR is correct about the population of formula one is growing. I totally agree with LuisR in his choice of the FG sportline (weight is very important factor).
My first time racing 1/5 scale formula one was during the 1/5 ROAR National at 301 raceway. it was a 12 car A-main. And when race said less than five until the start and than he said green green green the roar of those enigine excited me and distracted so that I complete forgot I was racing and I just watched these open wheel beauties for one entire lap before it hit me that I was suppose to be racing too.
Anyway, I will have an answer for you about your engine sometime today or tomorrow

Don't quote me on this, but i am PRETTY sure you will be ok to use the G270RC. For one, the G270RC is not a 27cc engine, its a 26cc engine BUT is its a four bolt head (the old G260RC used to be a 2 bolt head). When I got my F1 sportline last year, it came with a G260RC from the factory, and if you read the rules at the 1/5scale web page:
"F1 Engine displacement increase to 26cc to comply with EFRA and IFMAR usage of the same engine. The fuel tank size of 700cc and race length of 30 minute finals remains in an attempt to keep competition even between 23 and 26cc engines. Also if a competitor runs a 26cc engine in qualifying and sets his/her fastest time then that same engine MUST be used in the final."
The new cars are coming with the new engines G240RC and G270RC they are the same as the old G230RC and G270RC, again the only difference is that the head is a 4-bolt.
I am almost 100% sure that the G270RC will be allowed since is the engine that comes with the car from the factory, but wait until you hear from Carlton just to make sure.
The only thing I would recommend you get is front and rear brakes. When I got my F1 sportline, it didn't have front brakes and those are the most important brakes. The only brakes that came with the car, were the diff brake, I replace that with the independent brake for each rear tire (cables), the other thing I would recommend is get the sway bar kit. GRP "A" tires for the rear and GRP "B" tires for the front. that's pretty much it.

ok Marcosmecha,
After consulting my techincal inspector. and I am in agreement with him..my response you is the short answer: 301 raceway rules use ROAR's as the guide lines therefore you are expected to run an ROAR required legal engine which is a 23cc. The other information that LuisR explained to you was taken from NATC a club in Cali and and also the euorpean rules. It has been explained to me that you can have G240 which is the same as a 23cc (which is the four bolt engine). So you will be expected to have an legal 23cc engine which doesn't have advance or adjustable timing as a part of its performance feature.
I hope this answers your concern about the engine for formula 1 racing and I hope to see you out there.

marcosmecha, i am sorry i gave you wrong info, i just consulted with a friend and Carlton is right. F1 cars must run with a 23cc engine (G230RC or G240RC), I for one will have to change the engine on my F1 car. Hopefully, ROAR will change their rule soon. I would recommend you get the G270RC engine and also order a head and piston kit, ONLY if you feel comfortable replacing it yourself, it is really easy to do, that way you will have two displacements available in case ROAR changes the rule. If you are not mechanically inclined to go ahead and get the G240RC only.

Luis, thank you for the information. I am very interested in doing your suggested upgrades. I believe that the latest version of the fg F-1 Sportline comes with front brakes so i will skip that upgrade. On the other hand, where can i buy the parts you suggested? i looked in fgsupply.com but i am having a hard time identifying the tires (there are just too many and they all look very similar) and the sway bar. do you have part numbers you can share with me and the best place to get this parts if possible.

First of all thank you both for your help. I will go with the G270RC engine and hope that ROAR changes the rule soon since the RTR FG F-1 comes standard with a 26cc engine. I guess i need to order the head and piston kit for the 23RC or the regular 23cc engine. I am looking forward to racing with all of you this Spring.

usually what i do is look for part numbers on the Hobbythek website since you can see pictures of what you are looking for and then call FG Supply and order. If they don't have it then I order thru Hobbythek, they charge a little more because of shipping and Euro but they are excellent in delivery, I have never had an issue with them.

just be very careful when you remove nad re-install the the piston with the piston ring, you may damage the ring or cylinder wall. NEVER FORCE THE PISTON INTO THE HEAD!!!!!!
Good luck.

Thank you for the links. I looked in the websites and the prices are very reasonable. Hey, do you have pictures of your F-1 anywhere on this site or in youtube.com. I was watching a couple of races at 301 raceway and i was wondering if your F-1 was one of them.
I am in the process of putting a few pennies together to get one of these large scale beast. I have a question for the experienced guys and girls, would the F1 better for a novice driver?
It just seems the sedans are better protected against the rigors of a novice driver. I was looking at my nitro last night (btw: anyone need or know someone who needs a MTX4R with starter box, spares, carrying case, etc let me know) and the front A-arms took a pounding from the boards as I was learning how to drive the thing (which I still haven't )
