Timberline Raceway, Osawatomie, KS - Nitro and Quarter Scale Oval
What happened to the pictures?????
It appears that the owner of the 'other' site has taken my pictures down for some reason.....
There's a old life's lesson though - what goes around; comes around....
With spring approaching, there's a LOT of hard work being done at Timberline Raceway for the 2009 season! Here are some pictures of Dave's hard work getting ready for the 2009 season AND the 2009 QSAC Dirt Nationals!
First off is Dave and his pile o fences!!!!!!!!!!
Looks happy, doesn't he????
NEXT we have another view of the posts - all neatly lined up and ready for grommets! (you'll have to ask Dave about grommets!)
Here we have Dave at his happiest!!!!!!! Notice the big grin??? It never leaves his face when he's ridin' Big Blue!!!!
And finally you have a long distance shot of the track - you can get a real good idea of the banking and then just use a bit of imagination and you can see where the fence will go!
Lots of progress has been made due to some VERY unseasonal weather over the last few weeks!
AND, hopefully the weather will hold up for the next few weeks and we can start 'planting' fence posts and that kinda' stuff!
For those who don't know - Dave is one of the hardest workin' guys in R/C - he is a very 'in demand' professional who works VERY hard (and long)(and all over the country - from FL to CA at present!) at his real job and then works his butt off on the weekends to create some of the best r/c tracks around!
A bit of information on the track - it's 360' run line - so it's a 1/4 scale Quarter Mile, a 1/8th scale Half mile and REALLY big for 1/10th scale! Full information can be obtained at http://www.timberlineraceway.com
So enjoy the pictures - Dave & his gang of helpers are going to work our butts off to make a GREAT 2009 Season AND QSAC Dirt Oval Nationals!
Well, some more of us got together at Timberline Raceway in Osawatomie, KS on the 21st and did a bit of work!!!!!!!
The oval track is coming along GREAT - the 'back straight' (former front straight) needed a bit of a 'raise' so Dave asked his buddies at Larry Harris Excavating to lend a bit of a hand with some dirt movin' equipment!
and of course, a few things had to be 'removed'....
and some folks are a little scary with power tools....
Of course, lunch was in order for a hungry crew!
and of course, Chris S is a master with ANY form of saw!!!!!!!
Now it's beginnin' to look like an oval!!!!!!!
Soooo, hopefully the weather will allow a bit more work this coming weekend!!!!!
IF the weather would cooperate a bit the outdoor stuff would move along a bit faster but so far it's rained every Thursday & Friday for the last several weeks.....
Another work day at Timberline yesterday and LOTS more accomplished!!!!
First off, Dave spent the day pre-fabricating the sprinkler/irrigation system for the oval - if you haven't heard BOTH tracks will have irrigation systems this year and predicted watering times are running 10 minutes, start to finish for either track!!!!!!
Chris S, Billy P and Joe L spent the biggest part of the day working on the oval driver's stand - it's pretty much ready to set in place at this point and the the additional ramping will be added!
and Robert and Steve spent a lot of time attaching decking and drilling holes in PVC for the center border of the track!
and of course, LUNCH at We B Smokin' was an absolute MUST
Looking awesome! Dave sure built up the oval track from the looks of it overshadowing the offroad track. Cant wait to see it done and get to run some oval again up there.
Here's some good shots of Dave spraying some 'magic juice' into the oval track preparing the dirt!
To give you an idea of how devoted to the track Dave is, he's doing this on Saturday morning I believe - right before going to KS Speedway!
The creation of a great oval takes time - and this year it's taking a bit more time then weather has allowed!
Here's Dave's post from another forum:
I have to regret to inform everyone that we will not be able to start our season this coming weekend.
There is just to much to get done this week and the continuation of the wet weather just does not allow me to get the work completed to the track as needed.
I am deeply sadden to say that with my real job requiring extended travel to the West Coast every other week and both of my kids having graduation ceremonies the next two weekends, not to mention I am in a temporary wrist cast for pending wrist replacement surgery scheduled anytime I wish to have it, (I have been putting this off since last October). I just cant seem to get the work done. Getting old I guess?
I do not realistically see starting our season till June 6th. I will do my best to meet or beat this new date.
Again I am sorry if this inconvenienced some and want to throw in a BIG thank you to those who could help these last few weekends to try and make the original start date. WE DID OUR BEST.
Lots of good help today - and lots of work got done!
Sadly, yesterdays 2" of rain re-soaked the off road track - so no work got done down there! BUT, quite a bit was accomplished on the oval!
First here's some pictures from last week of the oval drivers's stand and the handicapped 'perch' - this puppy is HEAVY DUTY!
and Steve Larson was 'paint meister' today and got the irrigation system painted such a pretty yellow color! Steve didn't pick the paint though - he just applied it - I understand HIS favorite color tends to be something along the lines of burnt umber!
and finally, some FENCE WORK on the oval - all of those weeks of preparation are now beginning to get 'planted' in the oval!!!!!
and finally an overview shot showing the perimeter marked out on the oval!
Soooo, progress continues to be made!!!!!
IF we could just a get a bit of cooperation from the weather......
AND, as Steve so aptly puts it - we're getting CLOSE!!!
Thanks to lots of hard work by Joe Lammers (& Colin too!), Tim Murphy, Casey Prough, Steve and Robert Larson, Billy Pappin and of course the always hard working Chris & Dave Smreker!
AND, the oval track is really beginning to take shape!
The principal project for this week was the fence for the oval track! When we last left off there were 5 posts set - when we left today almost all of them were set! HUGE progress! In addition, the trenching for the irrigation system was dug - an operation which could not be done untill the final grade of the oval was completed!
Soooo, how 'bout some pictures?
Waterboy Joe??
And from above:
So, a GREAT weekend of work with a GREAT crew of volunteers has resulted in a LOT of forward progress!
Thanks so much to everyone who helps out and to Dave and family for providing a GREAT facility!
Well, another week passes and more work is accomplished!
This week heat certainly played a factor - it was close to 90 on Saturday and a bit hotter on Sunday.
The pictures below are of the work accomplished through Saturday - on Sunday, Dave and Chris got ALL of the fence posts IN THE GROUND and got the gates hung!
Soooo, First off is the 'hot pit' - with fence protection from the track and to the outside!
Looking North to South:
and South to North:
and a good shot of the North irrigation feed to the track:
and the North irrigation run to the center of the track:
and a couple of 'welder dudes'!!!!!
Lots of progress - it comes a bit at a time!
and everything is cemented into place so it's going to be fence hanging time this weekend!!!!!!!
AND, it would be GREAT to have a good turnout to help get this finished!!!!!
Sorry to be so late posting - I've been trying to get a few things done BUT I'm here in beautiful Sioux Falls, SD and have a quiet moment so here we go!
We had a GREAT crew last weekend at Timberline and a LOT of progress was made on both the oval and the off road!!!!
First the oval - since this is an OVAL thread!
The irrigation system is completely finished, tested and working perfect! Dave reports that the only part of the track that doesn't get watered is the top 6" or so! NOT a great place to run with a quarter scale and NOT somewhere I plan on running with my 1/8th late model!
Did I mention the fence??? We actually worked Dave out of fence! BUT, I understand that there's more due this Friday! The gates got hung the week before and truly you can see the end in site!
Dave & Billy worked hard getting the plasma cutter (yup!) set up and got the pilings for the Driver's Stand leveled, cemented and cut to appropriate length! All that needs to be done on these is a quick check by the building inspector and a fill with cement! THEN comes the task of setting the 6000# Driver's Stand on top!
OH, and all the pit tables are re-painted and ready to go in the off road area!
BUT a seriously LARGE amount of work was accomplished by our crew this weekend! Thanks to Steve and Robert Larson, Joe Lammers, Tim and Carter Murphey, Casey Prough, Billy Pappin and some silly old man that seems to show up from time to time..... You can't say enough about the leadership and inspiration shown by Dave & Chris Smreker - these guys NEVER quit and keep on diggin'!!!!!
Well, we're all back in town (for a bit) and are celebrating the holiday at Timberline with a bit of track work!!!!!!!!
AND, Dave brought out the BIG guns to help us today!!!!!!!
Check out the Jibs used to make an evenly distributed pick???
NICE crane - walks with 6000# very well I'd say!
and here his is as he get's close to the pilings!!!!!!!
Bolted down!!!!!!!
and of course, with the machine here it's a GREAT time to move everything on the place - including 'The Shed'.....
The view into turns 3 - 4 from the driver's stand
AND looking in to 1 & 2
OH, and ignore the 'trenches' in the track - they work out REALLY quickly withh Dave's new 'secret weapon' - the PULVERIZER!!!!!!
Soooo, IF the weather gods will cooperate we might get a couple of laps on the track from the driver's stand!!!! With our 1/8th late models!!! Remember a quarter scale quarter is a EIGHTH SCALE HALF!!!!!!!! I'm NOT sure they make a clutch bell big enough but we're going to give it a whirl on SPEC tires!!!!!
Pray for the rain that we're getting to STAY NORTH - and away from Osawatomie!!!!!!!
For more pictures, you can check out my galley at: Chris' SmugMug Site and while you're there check out my pictures (all 1100 or so of them!) from the 2009 ROAR Electric Off Road Nationals!
OK, well, it's been a LONG day to say the least!!!!! BUT, I think pretty much everyone was on the road to a quality set up when I left!
It looks like we've got about 20 cars in attendance so far with at least 10 more expected tomorrow!!!!! Possibly MORE!!!
The track is working VERY well - big hats off to Dave, Chris S and the crew that's been working on this project since JANUARY!!!!! I think it was worth it!!!!
At any rate, I've got a few pictures to post this evening and they check later for some on my Smugmug site!
I think it's the blue water that makes a difference!!!!!!!! and NO, I didn't do that with Photoslop either!!!!!!!
The driver's stand works VERY well - good view and everything!
