Default HPI 5b SS. Are they worth it?

Has anybody picked up a SS or the regular 5b? How is it holding up with colder weather and parts breakage?

I'm thinking about getting a 5bSS just to add to the collection. I race nitro on and off road but since the season is over and it's getting cold outside, I don't want to go electric indoors. I'm just looking for a fun car for damn near any time to run.. Is it worth the purchase?

that would be www.hpibajaforum.com

bajas are well and truley worth the cash, I recommend getting the ss version as you can build it yourself to get to know the ins and outs and it also comes with a tuned pipe and bigger displacement engine than the rtr (plus a few other differences)

warning tough - they are a MAJOR addiction

mmmmm 45min runtimes...

so much easier to start too! 2 stroke petrol's will start in about 3 pulls, and sometimes even start on half choke! and of course no tuning

What are the most common parts on the Baja that break? Control arms? shafts? I plan on racing mine as well as running it in cold weather.

shock shafts bend with serious jumping - phatdad shafts are what you'll need, pinion bolt breaks pretty easy - just replace it with a high tensile number before it happens or you may be up for a clutchbell too. Some people chew spurs - a robinson racing steel set is bulletproof

So even the SS shock shafts need to upgraded to Phats?

I was hoping the SS shaft would be stronger.

I think normal baja shock shafts are 4mm. The SS ones are 6mm.

I'm gonna get one as soon as I can get the scratch together. I like the size, and..... did I read a 45min runtime?! I also like the fact that I don't have to go hunt down a servo for steering right away either. The extra goodies in the SS kit seem to make for a good selling point too.

as far as parts breakage goes,i can break anything!first impressions are front a arms, steering servo gears, and make sure to add the extra bearing to the tranny.the top gear is only supported by one bearing in the plastic case.i drove about 100 miles to find this out in about 5 mins.
we where racing at papago raceway which is a well used 1/8 track.it was the perfect size for the bajas!the rtr engine worked just fine.the baja brings back driving finesse.
i was planning to sell mine, but after racing it i think im hooked...
