Default Need ICE CHARGER Expert??????

OK I have a ICE Charger I just bought. Evertone at the track seems to think my power issues on the track come down to charging. I run 4.8v NiCd 1600mAh Spec Pacs for oval racing. Just about everyone claims to have a peak charge of over 8v and state thier batteries will maintain a 6v plus charge after a rest.

I cannot get new or old packs to charge above about 5.6v and the seem to hold around 5.4v. Can some one tell me if the ice charger will charge a battery to a 8v peak and charge the battery so it seems to hold a 6v plus charge.

I looking or some one that can tell me what a recommended settings in this charge to get the most out of it without starting a fire.

You need to put this in the electric on road forum to get more views. Those particular batteries are not mainstream. That's an awefully high peak voltage for charging 4 cells. You wouldn't see that with typical cells used for racing. 8 volt peak, is that a good thing? I'd be more concerned with what they put out during a discharge, but then maybe I'm wrong.

i do not know about NiCd but for my Nimh 6 cells, i can peak at about 8.5V

The voltage at which a pack peaks at is largely a function of the charge parameters and the pack itself, rarely the charger.

The higher amp rate you charge at, the higher the pack will peak at. If a pack peaks at 6.5 at a 5 amp charge, it might peak at 7.1 on a 7 amp charge.

You might be getting a "false-peak" though - turn up the cutoff voltage and see if that helps. It’s common for cheapo packs to do that.

Also, have someone with a high-quality charger, i.e. a CE Turbo 30+ charge one of your packs and see what happens - that would tell you if your issue is pack-related.

As a side note, since he's racing Oval where power is everything, I wouldn't doubt that for a spec-class battery pack, people are charging at 10+ amps - that would produce the high peak voltage.

You are right though - peak voltage is not something to be concerned with relative to the discharge voltage.

The low peak voltage and slow car lead me to point at "false-peak" as the main cause.

I think I am going to buy a Ultra Vision and try it today they only have the dc model everyone is using this but in ac model. I was told the charging part is exactly the same. I used a dc power supply for the ice anyhow so welll see if this helps.

So, gunlocator, what amp rate do you charge them at? What rate do they charge them at? Any exploding cells from too high of rate? Last night at our track it sounded like Chinese New Years. Something was wrong with a guys charger or packs and they were exploding like firecrackers. Actually, more like gunfire.

I'd be curious what the result is on this one too. I bought an ICE recently and used last weekend for the first time and I'm really impressed with it so far. If there's anything about it that's not performing as advertised, please let us know and post it in this thread!

Thanks! Mr.Maim

8 volts is too high for a 4cell, I don't believe that, were they running 6 cell? I got my Pole Positions 3800's to 9.1v before I cut off thae charger and thats after not using them for months and I was just cycling them.

If charged at the extreme amp rate I suspect the other guys are, NiCads can peak that high. I had 6c NiCad packs that would hit 11.0ish “back in the day”. You're playing with fire - just about literally to do so, but NiCads are very different from the modern 3300+ cells.

I was charging at 6 amps as they are I switched to a Dynamite Ultra Peak and was getting 8v+ peaks and a charge of 6+ volts after it sat for a while charging at 5 amps.

Default Keep the ICE

Dude I saw that your selling your Ice. I think that's a mistake. Sell the other one and use the money to buy a good pack of 3800's. You won't be dissapointed.

The ICE charger, once you learn how to use it, is a much better tool for the job.
Your going to lose money either way. But later on the Peak charger won't be good enough for you. Mark my word on that.

Good luck, and have fun either way.
