You can also use an Iphone 3gs. They just recently put out new updated IOS 6.* that will run the newer Traxxas Link software. That's what I'm using for mine. Might save you some bucks.
The ipod touch3 will work, but the IOS on it won't run the newer Link software. But will run the older stuff.
They don't update the IOS for the touches like they do for the Iphones.

Oh and the iphone doesn't have to have a sim card or be activated for phone service. You can download the Link through a wireless connection from the app store, just open it on the Iphone. You will have to have an Apple account, so be prepared to make one.

An ipod 4th gen will work with the latest traxxas app to be able to use the TSM 6533 receiver
