Default Lifespan of a piston/liner?

How long or how many gallons would a piston/liner last under normal conditions, meaning not bashing runs, but regular track use and assuming it did not go through a damaged bearing or rod and not overheat regularly ?

Depends.. My last motor I had 5 gallons go through, and it finially gave up compression. The side of the piston has gone dark gray, and the chrome has gotten really thin on the sleave. You can actually see spots where the chrome has worn out. I read somewhere that is from dust getting past the air filter.. Different fuel might have helped, or maybe I ran that motor lean times.. The bearings, and piston/sleave are trashed on that motor.

My new motor has 2.5 gallons run on it, and the piston and sleave look brand new still. Hoping to get 5-7 gallons of fuel on this motor, which means I can finish this summer, and run all of next year on this motor too.

A fellow racer in our club got 5 years on his motor before it finially gave up. So he must have run 10 or more gallons in that motor.

It depends on the user...... if you race it so hard ( 90 -100 pct ) maximum power, the piston sleeve will wear out after 5 races. If you race it relax , engine tuning 80 pct of maximum power, the piston sleeve will last maybe 8 races or more. However, if you feel the compression is already weak, i think is better to replace the piston sleeve rather than trying to retune the idle everytime during race. Weak compression's indicators : engine cannot idle, no power, idling very high and still dead easily.
