O.S. SPEED Tuned 21XZ-R

I'm breakin my OS Speed, takes about 3 liters. Running at a temperature of 90 °, the engine begins to run fairly and reaches high rpm but at low rpm the engine has no power. Is this normal? The LSN is 4 and 1/2 turn out. could tighten more? Is this correct? Can i turn in it?

Your temp of 90 is a little low also. When tuned for best performance, depending on weather, etc., you will probably see temps between 115 and 130. I always tune by sound and performance, not temperature. Too many factors can affect temperature to use it as the only guide to tuning your engine.
You want to have good, crisp acceleration, good smoke, a steady, low idle, and strong top end power.
Good luck!

Just picked up this engine and was wondering what's the best glowplug to use for break in? RP7 or RP8? Or maybe even RP6?
#277
I use RP7 since day one and did break-in very nicely.
I couldn't get any better performance with RP6 or RP8 on my local track, however the factors here never change too much, weather is always slightly same:
Air temperature always between 28-35 Celcius
Humidity always between 60-85%
Sea level
I can't say much about cold weather or high altitude as I never tested this specific engine under these conditions.

Thanks to Rick and sm4100 for your responses.
I'm playing in humid Hong Kong. Temp over 30 degrees celsius (rising to 34 degrees later in summer) and humidity between 70% to over 90%.
Will probably break in with rp7 first then experiment with 7 and 8 to see what gives me better performance

When breaking in this engine do you guys just leave the needles as they are as they come from the factory?

Hot air gun is the best but if you dont have one a hair dryer very close to the cylinder head also works. Just dont blame me if you burn the hair dryer .....
I broke in the engine on stand and it still delivers amazing power after 4 galons

Yes leave them as they come but after some tanks you should lean just a little bit just like a normal break in procedure. Make sure you heat the engine 70-80 degrees before 1st run as this engine comes very tight and you may scratch the sleeve if the engine is not pre heat.

Thanks for that. I do intend to use the heat cycle method of break in, but I'll be mindful of leaning out after a couple of tanks.

Anyone know what the life expectancy of these engines are? I know it would be dependent on one's usage but I'm looking for what one would look out for or considerations as to when an engine ought to be replaced by a new one.

I just got a 21XZ-R VII (not a speed tuned) and a THS on-road pipe for an MRX5. Has anyone run these engines on 20% fuel? Will it make good power with 20%?
#285
The difference is negligible. I run roughly 20% fuel (mix of 16 and 25 as the fuel i like does not come in 20%) in o.s speed zac version, runs well with stock shims and rp7 plug.
Not sure about that pipe, best to use the t-2080. you can get the pipe/manifold set for about $100 from Japan.
