Shepherd VCC 610407 clutch spring versus Mugen springs
What is the difference in engine feel compared to the Mugen Super hard, hard and soft springs compared to the VCC spring? I am a drag racer and currently use the Mugen silver(hard) spring and it has been the better one to use of the other Mugen springs and am now wondering what is the VCC spring worth. Thanks for any insight and where can I get this spring?

The shepherd spring is very hard. Give it a try, don't know much about drag racing but you might like it. Another one that's worth trying is the Orion CRF spring.

Is the VCC spring even harder than the Mugen Super Hard spring?
Thanks for the Orion info as well.
I drag race under the IMDRA.com banner and have the second quickest "UNOFFICIAL" Funny Car in the series of a 1.55 and a best speed of 88 MPH in a 132' drag strip. The quickest "UNOFFICIAL" pass is by another racer that has been 1.535@86 MPH so I am after him.......lol. These passes were at two different tracks as well. I am gunning for 1.4's out of a nitro mill this '11 and so far with some testing, my Kangaroo has gained ALOT more power over the 1.55 set-up and was wondering about that clutch spring. Thanks again.

It's harder than both the silver and gold Mugen springs. Probably close to an MSR black spring only better.

So is this spring even harder than the hardest Mugen spring?

Does the Orion make your engine feel snappier off the bottom end?

The Orion makes the clutch more like a switch so far I know on the Mugen MRX2/3 4-shoe clutch. You can adjust it to a high RPM and it snaps right in.

What Roelof said, I only install the Orion spring when the traction is really up, otherwise the car is undriveable
I had a hard time sourcing one, I managed to track some down on ebay, about $15US.

i think more important of the spring is the lasting effect to me u can first install any spring and tighten it down to make it just as hard as another spring its how long it last, silver mugen spring hardness will go away fast then the mugen msr will last longer, then the orion, and the sheaperd spring will last the longest and keep its shape the best. the other springs under heavey load get bent out of shape some real fast, so in a long race u want a harder spring that keeps it shape better. now your drag racing so its over in 3 secs and you can go back and retighten your spring were as in a race we cant so we want a super hard spring that stays hard throu out the race. remember all springs are different sizes as well as far as longer and shorter, what i do well now i know my settings but if u didnt take a new spring tighten and test it till your hear the motor really reving up and car wont move then u keep backing the spring out and test each time till u hit the sweet spot and u can feel this by putting the car on the floor and holding the back body mount without to much force and open the throttle half way u will feel the different force of the car pulling your arm and the strongest pull will b the sweet spot also the sound which takes time to learn but u can hear when it is right... hope this helps you also brooklyn hobbies has a ton of orion and msr springs in stock vcc spring i just bought 15 of them getting 1 or 2 from different places from around the globe... also anyone serious about racing and there clutches should go to the brooklynhobbies web site and look at the digital clutch tool they have its a must!!! right now it only fits the mugen bell but he will have the tool for the other bells soon!!! good luck

ralphie, good analysis. I never thought too much about the spring tension wearing out but do understand why too. I will try for the Orion spring first and also keep my eye open for a Shepherd one. They are hard to find around here in the USA.

ashford carries them but they have gotten so popular he can't keep them in stock. Keep checking with him.

wingracer, thanks bro. I did check with them and saw that they were outta stock on the Shepherd ones but I will keep checking for sure.
A few more pics of my cars, track pics and various engine stuff. I am like you guys in taking my RC Drag racing serious thus far and ALWAYS looking for an edge.
