Default How hot is too hot?

I was trying to tune my sons nitro car today at the firehouse (after proper break in). It seemed hot to me so I took one of out thermal imaging cameras out and pointed it at the engine. I got a reading of 190f
Is that way too hot?
If so does that mean I have to turn down the high idle?

depending on the motor, but usually I like to be in the 240-260 range. I have had motors that run good at 190 and others that liked to run at 290. there are a lot of factors that go into it, but in general if you are having a good trail of smoke out the pipe and the power is good it will be fine.

Have run several engines to 300, trying to get that " sweet tune". Never have hurt one. Some say if its smokin and running good, your good. Personally, 280 is my redline. When I've seen 300, it was for a very short period of time. I don't care who says what, you do NOT want to much heat! Its common sense! Your cars engine temp is regulated with a thermostat right? IMO, your the thermostat.....

Measure the temp at the glow plug.... 190 is fine but if its not at the glowplug, its not a reliable reading.

Temps doesn't matter too much as long as its within maybe 190-260 depending on the engine. I like to be in the 240 range max. But if my engine runs well at 210 one day, I will leave it at that.

Don't worry about temps, make sure the engine have a steady smoke stream and a steady idle, this is for your son so don't need a race tune, once you get more familiar with this engine then play for fine tune, They last longer a little reach. MHO.

If I dont recall but I think Novarossi says that your engine temps should be 160f above the temp outside at that moment. The abumdant temp outside. If its 50 degrees out then your engine should run at about 210 but that is a rule of thumb if your new to tuning. If you trying for a race tune I would do what they said in the above post. Good luck

Temps very alot from engine to engine and what vehicle there in. Like monster truck vs 1/8 buggy it's going to run very warm in monster truck then put it in buggy it will be very rich. I had Savage Picco 26 always ran 280-310 shouldn't always get to wrapped up in temp read the glow plug is give you best answer on what is going on inside the engine

The magic number for "too hot" is precisely 497 degrees.....

Seriously...I kid. There is no magic number really. Every engine runs differently and can handle different temps. I've seen guys run their engines at over 300 degrees and it still stays running..... I've seen engines overheat past 350 and still survive.

Ignore temp and tune for performance and smoke. Use temp as a secondary/tertiary tuning aid.
