how many gallons?
ive been out of nitro the las 4-5 yrs and recently bought a buggy.im curious how many gallons of fuel on average do these newer motors last before a rebuild and is it needed to change the rod after break-in?

No need to change the rod on a properly broken in motor. The most important thing is to get the engine running at 200F as quickly as possible. A lot of guys are using the Competition heater to aid in this. I personally dont have one and just try to get the engine leaned out and running reliably as quickly as possible. 1/2 tank or so and Ive got a tune that I can run races on...and I do. Ive got less than 1/2 gallon on my new motor and its run 2 full race days already.
As far as how long engines last that is unanswerable. There are too many variables but its safe to say engines are lasting as long as ever if not longer.
I run OS motors and they usually last me 6 gallons or so. If I had done things a little differently I could have easily gotten more. Usually theyre good out of the box for about 4 gallons or so then I change the rear bearing and maybe give them a little pinch.
BUT there is a factor to consider you may not have thought about. Most of these new engines get so much better fuel mileage that 6 gallons now is like 10-12 gallons before. Back in the day most engines would get maybe 6-7 minutes in a buggy (125ml) now I am hearing people talk about 13 minutes being possible and the guy who pitted for Drake at PNB said he ran 15 minutes on 100ml of fuel. My OS motors usually get really close to 10 minutes on a tank.
