More run time....who REALLY needs it?
Seems like everyone is so concerned about how much run time they can squeeze out. Seems to me that most of us can get an easy 10-11 minutes these days with a stock engine.
So, how much run time do we really need? Is speed and engine performance more important? Aren't most of us racers running 15-20 minute mains?
Thoughts?

How many people actually stop at 10 minutes in a race on a decent size track? In SoCal I rarely see someone pit at 10 in a race at most tracks. I can do 11-11:30 by myself in practice, but come mains time I am stopping at 7 and 14 minutes in a 20 minute main, as with many people.

If you can get runtine and power , why not?

Funny, you never see topdrivers make pitstops at 11.30. Its nearly only Hara that pits at 9:00 in the big races. The other pits at 7:30...
Well... Its a huge advantage to have good runtimes during races. Here in DK we often have 45 min a-mains so most people pits at 7:30. You can save 1 pitstop if you can pit at 9:00. If you got even more runtime you make pitstops when the pitlane are empty: 10, 20, 29 and 39.

I think run-time for casual club racers(if there are even any of those here besides me, and not just all sponsored people..) is overrated too. I've never been in a race where the math added up in such a way that an extra 30 seconds or evne 1:30 would have made a difference. Here they normally have 5 or 7 minute qualis, a 15 minute semi, and a 20 or 30 minute main. The only time I screwed up I was new and asked one of the local guys when to pit during a 30-minute truggy final. He said everybody did it at 7:30. So I figured, OK I'll do the same, even though I was comfotably getting 10 with fuel to spare(Mach 427, he an RB S5), cuz I just assumed all these guys know what they're doing.. And that he did. He beat me by half a lap - finishing 4th to my 5th, having pitted at 10 and thus one less pit stop.. Cheeky bastard.. (was actually funny and we had a laugh.. Nice guy..)
The only reason I care about run-time nowadys is the cost of nitro (€44 a gallon..)..

CLUB DAYS we run 7 minute heats and 30 minute mains so really the 10 minute pit stop only comes into play in the final if you are only coming in twice during the final so your pit man would fill you up out on the grid and drop the car for the start, lots stop at 7.30 minutes but you will find they are not the guys winning the racers as the extra 15 seconds in the 3rd pit stop cost then 1/3 to 1/2 a lap.
RACE EVENTS we run 10 minute heats x 6, 20 or 30 minute bump up finals, 45 - 60 minute mains and this is where the 10 plus minute tank times are truely needed, with a rolling start and using the shortest cut through to start the race on the line after the buzzer you begin your heat on the clock, if you hit the line at 9.59 you are then going to do the extra lap which could range from 30 - 45 seconds which means to complete a heat with out a pit stop you need a runtime that is above the 11.30 mark to trust the engine for each of the 10 minute heats and I find alot of guys run this method and alot of them run short during that last lap but lots of guys make this kind of run time day in and day out.
FINALS RACES we have lots of guys that pit on the 10 minute mark and lots of guys that pit closer to 7.30 - 8.30 minute marks and again its the guys that are fast and doing the least amount of pit stops that are winning the races, so a wrap up would be that having the 11.30 run time could be the difference as to how hard your event is going to be from the first heat.

Social club on a great track - we run til everyone is dry, be that 8 mins or 10.... and don't even really count laps. You know if you're winning or losing :-)
all about fun isn't it....?

Everyone is a PRO at the golf driving range but get them on the course and the true colors show
For me it depends on how I'm doing in the race. You can go out and get 11:30 on a tank durring practice or some claim more but when it's race time and your up againsed guys your bumpin and rubbin with, playing catch up or playing chase me, your fuel milage changes big time. Run time comes into play when your in a 20 min main and you want to pit at 10. So does everyone else.... What do you do? How much fuel have you used playing grab ass out on the track with guys that wont let you pass? Nothing worse then trying to get around a guy that you have laped already and he wants to play the (im not letting you pass me game) because he has no idea where he's at in the race, no respect either. Just a bunch of variables to take into account at that given time in a race. Cant really tell when you want to do something before the time comes, you never know what might be in your way IMO.

why not have both......for example my Clocked Werks B5 has to be one of the fastest engines on the dirt, it is also ridiculously good on fuel...... I have seen engines with half the power not get the same runtimes....

20 min mains? Almost all of the my races last year had 30min-45min A mains.
