Dan, its got the shoe type clutch on it.
never lift, try using a different hole to mount the shoes onto the flywheel. You want to use the hole nearest the end of the shoe. If you are already doing this, there might be a bit of extra material that is keeping the shoes from pivoting and making good contact with the clutch bell. You can test this by putting the shoes onto the clutch bell pins without the circular spring. Then try pivoting the shoes out just like when you rev the motor. You need to do this to both shoes at the same time. If somthing is hanging up, you should be able to see it or at least feel it.
