To Filter, or NOT to filter...?

Who runs a fuel filter?

Do you use it to filter the fuel? ...... or for the extra volume? :(

I have an in tank filter on my R40. I have not used a filter at all with this car. Some use it for the exhaust side too....to block any crap from going into the fuel tank.

I used to run filters religously but always felt they could be causing more trouble than they are helping.

If you have an intank fitler. Theres really no reason to run it , but in theory it wont hurt. But I always feared clogged filters or leaky fuel lines letting in air. I think its just one more thing to worry about , no reason to make it more complicated.

As for the exhaust side , cant hurt and if it leaks who really cares , its blowing air in anyways. Also helps calm the pressure of air entering the tank. Which will help keep your fuel from bubbling, which in turn will shoot a bunch of bubbles at the carb at fuel throttle and can cause some leaning and tuning issues thats sometimes hard to pinpoint , especially when it happens when your car is whizzing around a track.

most cars have filters in there tanks. Some people put filters on the pipe side so the back pressure doesn't let any dirt into the tank

o well he beat me to it

It depends how well the filter in the tank works ive seen some really crappy ones before. i always have at least one filter i've some motors pitted badly on the piston from not funning a filter

i always filter my cars and trucks.

I use in line fuel filter to carb. Sometimes I found black particles inside the secondary filter.

pitting on the top of the motor would not be from dirt in the motor unless u have major scaring on the side of the piston. pitting on top of the piston is from not having the motor shimmed right

Dan is right pitting is not from not using or using a fuel filter. Pitting is from pre ignition caused by running the engine too lean or as dan suggested incorrect head clearence.

Cheers Daniel

Thats what I thought too , pitting = detonation.

more important than a fuel filter is the air filter......
if your gonna get crap in your engine then most likely that is where its going to come from..

I used to wash and reuse them but no longer do that after washing one as well as I could and then cutting it in half to see the particles still inside..
the particles may be small and wont do much damage at once, but over time its going to take its toll...

sorry got off topic but thought it was worth mentioning...

Slo me and you agreed for once!! ya! :D

Slo-MTX4 01-18-2006 02:43 PM

Dan its all good man.

i add a fuel filter in my car just in case. its something cheap that might help the car.

Ivan Dickson 01-18-2006 04:36 PM

I would recommend using a fuel filter, you can't go wrong. :tire: :tire:
