For you 1/8 scale onroad racers this maybe a cure for spinout caused when you do a panic stop when your 1/8 scale onroad car is equipped with a frt oneway diff. I stumbled on this possible solution when running my 1/5 scale 4wd onroad car. My 4 wd FG Sportline car came equipped from the factory with front cable disc brakes on each front wheel and a large rear single disc brake. I replaced the heavy , super loose gear diff in the front with a lighter oneway diff setup which improved the acceleration of my car. I was concerned that if I had to do a panic stop in a corner my car would spinout but it did not because I have brakes on both front wheels. On your typical 1/8 scale onroad car your braking force is on the rear wheels and the front wheels freewheel and if you do a panic stop the rear wheels lockup and you spinout. This does not happen when you have 4 wheel braking that has been adjusted right you just come to a controled stop regardless of how much force you apply your brakes . You 1/8 scale guys might want to experimentwith reducing the size of the 1/5 scale cable disc brake system and try them out on your 1/8 scale cars if it is legal to have disc brakes on the front end. I believe you would have a bigggg improvement in braking. Here is a picture of your typical 1/5 scale braking system its design is quite simple.

I have often wondered why the 1/8 scale onroad guys have not put frt disc brakes on both wheels. Especially when they are running oneways.

Thanks for that info I also run FG 4wd but I changed the rear to disks also and wondered how the oneway would work will be ordering one today.

It works great , Kmichael. The oneway gives you more on power steering in the corners and faster rat of acceleration combined with the disc brakes you get better overall handling.

I seen this same system on a fellow racer car "Dan Lewis" 3 years ago. He designed it for a Shepherd 1/8 on road vehicle.

He said it worked great. Some of the challenges were how to bias the brakes equally between the left and right front tires. Also the bias between the front and rear brakes. Since he custom made all the parts; If he damage anything during a race he was petty much done.

I have grabbed some pics of the old Sgrid site.

In Europe it is by rules forbidden to use front brakes. The only way to have them legal is a solid front shaft.

Its against the rules. Having a solid in the front is also against the rules.

I really don't get why people want to change this, its part of driving an 1/8th scale car. If a driver cant handle the rear wheel only braking they should run another class. Plus there are times when having the rear come around like that is needed, very few times, but sometimes...

Solid front is alowed! It is mostly used in the rain.

I just searched the current ROAR rules and the 2010 ROAR rules for 1/8 onroad. Much to my surprise, there is no restriction on front brakes. I'm not sure when the rule went away. It had been in place since the inception of the class.
