The starter box has an electric motor inside that turns a rubber wheel. If you look at your nitro car there is an oval shaped hole in the chassis directly underneath the flywheel. When everything is properly aligned and setup with the starter box, you place your car on the starter box, and push the car down. This will start the electric motor in the box and at the same time will have the rubber wheel contact the flywheel thereby turning over the engine.

Obviously you need fuel and a glow igniter as well. A battery or two for the starter box is needed also.
