Do you have a photo?
What fuel do you run?
How do you maintain your engine after you run/race?

+++1. I fell for the same line of BS. I always run all the fuel completely out. For a very short time, I didn't use ARO. I figured I was racing at least once a week and rust wouldn't form in less than a week in a controlled environment. That cost me a good engine. Rust can form overnight. If I'm at a 2 day weekend race, I still use ARO, for peace of mind if nothing else. I also take my engines apart every other race day to check for wear and staining, either carbon deposits or any spots of rust. Engines are to expensive to ignore.

I'm getting back into the hobby after 5+ years so I'm not sure what the best brands are now. Can you recommend a good ARO? Thanks.

Someone told me they're carbon deposits from blow back, not rust

Take out the crack. Push a small piece of fuel tube over the crank pin to protect and then with a Scotch Brite pad you can wipe it away.

I've been using Mugen after run oil.
But haven't done it on this motor yet and it shows. Just hope it comes right off and doesn't affect performance, its the fastest motor I own with plenty of power
