Hi all,

Took out my pull-start recently.

Tried putting it back, and now part of the pull-start string is hanging out. re-did it and still the same result.

Could anyone teach me the proper way to re-install a pull-start?

Its kinda hard.I made a tool that will let me rewind the spring.Its really hard on the fingers.Patiences.Its easier to buy a new one.Sometimes the end of the spring gets bent.It can be straighten but it will break too.

there are several tuts on the net showing how to rebuild a pull start.....
if you can, save yourself the headaches and get a starter box..

Put the spring in the case, and then just tie the rope on to the pulley, it really doesn't matter how much is left "hanging" out, put the pulley on the spring in the case. At this point you will have an "assembled" pull starter, just with a loose rope. Now take a small screw driver or similar tool, and fish the rope up from where it comes off the pulley and then out of the case. You now take the rope and tighten the handle, by wrapping it around the pulley, make sure you keep your thumb on the pulley other wise it might spring out. After you get most of the rope worked in, pull the handle/rope out, this will tighten the spring; wrap the rope around the pulley a couple more times. Walla, a working pull starter! Now just make sure it doesn't come flying apart when you are putting it back on the car.

i tried winding back those springs and rebuilt the pull start, but the spring keep breaking up.Now the spring is getting short.

DO they sell the spring? or i have to buy a new set of pullstart?

yes, your local hobby shop should be able to get you just the spring. Often times either the rope breaks or the spring breaks. Major causes of the rope breaking are: 1) guy thinks it is his Briggs and Stratton lawn mower with 6' of cord, or 2) body is rubbing on it when you pull on it. The spring just where’s out.

Ok let’s try this again with some pictures.

First get the spring, pulley, and rope/handle in the proper place. It really doesn't matter how much rope is left hanging out for now. Make sure to hold the pulley in place with your thumb or it will fly apart.

Next, take a small screwdriver or similar tool and fish out the rope from in between where it come off the pulley and goes out of the case.

OK, now for the tricky part, you need to tighten up the rope, you can only go around about two times and then you will need to let the spring take the rope back in. The trick here is that you are not just wrapping the cord around the pulley, but actually turning the pulley as you go.

Almost done, make sure to keep that thumb in place other wise you will be back to step one. Keep tightening up the pulley/rope until there is a little tension on the handle pulling it back into the case. You know, just enough so the handle is not hanging there limp.

DONE! But make sure to keep something over the pulley until you are ready to put it back on the engine.
