Spring compression values change by wire size, or number of coils (different manufactures may also use wires with more or less spring). The tighter and the more coils the softer the spring, and this why coils in progessive springs have some coils that are tighter together. Springs for on-road nitro cars usually differ by a full turn of the coil, and then change of wire size of 0.1mm between each different spring for the next rating. The lighter springs that electric cars use, can change by as little as a quarter of a turn between each new value (e.g. HPI 654* series). Also note that rear springs are always longer and consequently softer.

Put the different springs together end for end in a vice or between fingers; then press together and measure or observe which spring changes length the most, to test which is harder or softer.

I hope that this has helped.

Kindest regards,
Lars.
