Thrust bearing
I had the same problem.
I changed clutch bells, thrust bearings, engines so many times, I gave up.
No one believed me that I was running without a thrust bearing until I pulled the clutch bell off and showed them
I have not had that problem sense though.
My MTX4R, and all of my 1/8th scale cars run a thrust bearing.
Still dont know why the MTX3 would not work with a thrust bearing even though I changed bearings, bells, engines many times.
If possible, find a good sealed flange bearing to keep the dirt out.
I say go with what ever works.

I too ran the mtx3 without a thrust bearing for a long time and it worked fine. I had too many fall apart so I took it out and put in a thick washer that I got off someone on ebay. When I got the mtx4 though, I decided to give it a go again and would grease it before every race day and never had one fall apart since.

I use brass washers, no problems since then.

i've been using the same thrust bearing since day 1 on my cars...no problems at all.
maybe should check yr clutch settings. too large the end play would bust yr bearings usually.
