Default Serpent NovaMega Gurus: can you ID this SX-15? (pic)

I bought this brand new NovaMega SX-15 from a LHS (no box/instructions) . The motor is not a Micheal Salven and not a turbo. The carb is 6.5mm with no restrictor. This one threw me for a loop because it has an early purple cooling head (small vertical cooling fins on top of the normal fins). It has the revised crankcase which leads me to believe it is still an evo4. The date stamped on the mount is '99. I checked myTSN and there is no SX-15 that looks like it. Perhaps serpent put this cooling head on the Evo4's that came in the impact kits. That at least justifies the reason the motor sold with no box. I bought the motor for $125.00 which I think is quite a steal if in fact it is an Evo4.

Thanks in adv.

PS- I have not broken in a serpent nova before- is it factory shimmed for a % nitro?

Forgive my lack of photographic expertise...the photo is a bit blurry, but you get the picture.

Nope, by looking at the cooling head, that is a EVO-3, the version before EVO-4............99 should be the LAST year of EVO-3 cause I remember friend of mine that had the 99 spec IMPACT are running with that motor.

It should not be a EVO-4 cause no one would use the EVO-3 heat sink on a EVO-4.

EVO-2 has a smaller heat sink so it is 100% not EVO2.

If you look at mytsn, the EVO-4 and 5 are both using the newer heat sink (like the typical heat sink that goes horizontal instead of vertical look like all engine we use now.)

But for $125 brand new, it is still a very good price on 15 engine to run around or practice (or even some local race), just not up to par if you do MID-WEST series or other 235mm open races......cause IMPACT class are all open, most ppl are running 7-ports EVO4 MS or at least, EVO-5 Turbo MS or JP mod....

Since yours are 3 ports non-turbo, no extra or remove shims required, (but check to make sure there is a silver one underneath the button...) Run your regular fuel (like 20%) to break in your engine............or you can go to mytsn to download the Nova Mega maintenance guild......

But like typical engine breaking.....let the car run rich on starter box....temp reach 200 degree, shut it off and cool off, then do at least 6 times...then dry break in, run the car rich and slow on track at least 3 tanks, then you can start leaning 1/8 turns at a time (lean the engine every 3-4 laps each for at least 3 more tanks)

So the revised case (extra cooling ribs) were introduced on the evo3? I thought that it was introduced on the evo 4. All of the SX-15's with this head I have ever seen do not have the revised case as mine does.

No problem for 2wd spec class, does anyone else even race 235 anymore?

If you are talking about the ENGINE case, that I really don't know how to tell it is a EVO 3 or EVO 4 or EVO 5

But if you look at his pictures above, that purple heat sink with verticle fins, that for sure is EVO3.

EVO2 are much smaller head, and EVO 4 and 5 are pretty much like what we saw on Serpent website now.

Who race 235mm....? Mid-west series (6 or 7 states races hosted by Serpent and others) and Winter National this next weekend...and I think there are more.

However, you won't see 100 ppl racing in that class anymore....if lucky, it shoiuld be like 20-30 ppl tops.

i had this engine on my impact m2 spec 99, with the vertical fin head. but my crankcase is different, the front portion below the carb doesn't have so many ribbs/webbing, only horizontal webbing is there. so that means mine's evo 2.5??

Yeah, I have an evo 2 with the small 7 fin cooling head, I also have what I think is an evo 3, It has the older style case without the extra ribs/fins...but since it is an MS it doesnt have the vertical fin cooling head. I have another motor that I know is an evo 4 MS and the case is exactly the same as the one I posted the pic of.
