for rtr's
kyosho Fw-06
cen CT5
hpi RS4 3 evo

these are better cars to get into onroad nitro!
My opinion
As for racing go with kyosho Fw-06, a shaft driven car almost equivalent to belted high end cars

It's a start & if you get really into then move up to a kit
Just make sure your local hobby shops have parts support
Tc3 are a bit brittle
Hpi is a bit more durable than the Tc3
Kyosho is equivalent to Hpi

The best car is one that the majority of guys run in your track.

That way you have parts and some "expert" tuning advice.

The guys at my track are running the Serpents 7xx or the Xray, so my choices were pretty simple.

But if you have parts and some tuning advice ... go for it. You'll want to upgrade to a newer car design sooner rather than later though.

btw, ntc3 is a good old car. normally bashed by new comers.

if you have it? yes it is a fine car. I would even put money on the fact that a quality driver that would already be in the nationals A, would be able to put the car there this year although I don't feel that the car has enough support and it is not as solid of a platform as the other majors.

if you don't then the above answers are correct.

if you could get your hands on a team magic rtr that would be the best choice cause if you get serious it can be upgraded to be very competitive
cheers

TC 3 is always good for a beginner as it is shaft drive with very little maintenance....cheap to begin with....and depends your tracks too..

A NTC3 is OK but it can not take much abuse like the Mugen, Serpent, XRay or Kyosho's can. None of them are made to crash but some do better then others. Even the best drivers will brush a board most race days.

If you can find a year or two older used car and race for a year or so then when you get serious get the new model. I do recommend getting the car that most of the guys run at your track.
