What is a transponder?!

Hi i see these red boxes on the cars but what do they do?!

a transponder is a "I am here" device you place on your r/c.

when at a race (or sometimes anyday if the track owner wants to) they places this bar over or under/in the track at a certain location. when each car goes under or over that bar/wire a lap time is recorded and a new one started that information is then relayed to a computer and depending on the service you have also goes online so you can see it at home.

its pretty much a lap counter/ timer.

the part that goes on the car is just the part that tells the bar something has passed under it.

A transponder is a lil red box with a unique serial number for keeping track of your lap and lap times. Everytime you pass the start/finish line it transmits a signal to the track computer via a line buried under the track surface. Hope this helps you...
