Default Clutch Help ?

Well I took my car out for the first time today and had a minor glitch I set
the clutch up pretty much as the manual described with the exception of
shimming the clutch bell out so it did not drag on the shoe.
The clutch spring nut was at about .8 and the end play on the bell was at about .4.
When I ran the car it took alot of rpm for the clutch to engage and
when you would run at part throttle it seemed as though the clutch would
engage/disengage almost sounding as if the engine was surging but I am sure
it was the clutch.
Is the clutch spring to tight for having it shimmed away from the shoe.
I am sure I am not the first to have this happen so rather then play around I thought I would ask for some help.

Does this happen when you first start the car up, then as you run does it act fine as it warms up.

No it seemed to happen no matter what the engine temp.
If I gassed it hard it would blast away but at part throttle the cluch seemed to go in and out so I wodered if it was a symptom of clutch spring adjustment.
One thing I did not mention was that 2 of the four flyweights of the clutch are stock the other 2 have been drilled to 4mm.
It was that way when I got it is it possible the clutch flyweight are too light for the .8 spring nut adjustment
Thanks

Try the same setting with all stock flyweights then see what happens. Also try a little less spring tension first.

Thanks for replying it was getting late so I decided to call it a nite after I lost the only E-clip I had for the two speed tranny, spang off in the parking lot I did not have any there with me. (dupdi doo)
I did not even think about the flyweights untill after the first post.
The set of flyweights I have in the car are the only ones I have I quess I could fill one hole with epoxy for testing. I am planning to order a set after I figure what else I need to order.
Thanks again.

Clutches are sooo important and if you ask 5 people you will get 5 different answers. Then you'll get the answers like this is what the pros do to their clutch but keep in mind not everyone can get the benifit out of it or even control the car with a clutch like the pros. I think you should just use the stock settings and use the spring to adjust after you have the proper gap and end play. Hope this helps. Any ? Pm me.

Thanks that should come in handy, I have not set up a clutch like this before.
I also have an older on road car that uses a standard type clutch like those on todays off road cars.
Thanks Again.

Also,,
Try to listen to it closer,,It may be the 2 Speed shoe shifting & " Down shifting " Double clutching as some would say. Just throwing that out there.
Cause Normaly .8 and .4 with a fresh pad is a good starting point.

Most of Your 1/8 scale Gatherings will be during the ( ALL STAR RACES ) in tampa. So next weekend is probably gonna be no good for 1/8 scale. Check SS Speedways thread in the FL. section for the next all star dates. And Talk Greg Into driving over

I will check out SS post for the next all star race.
I talked to Greg today he was working He said they
expect the new addition soon so I don't think we will see him untill Kissimmee.
So if nothing else I will see everyone there.
