Default Nitro body venting???

I've been seeing a lot of nitro bodies these days cut differently than what is typical. Usually a body has a hole in the windshield that is inline with the engine head. Now I'm seeing some pro racer bodies that have the front hole cut at the top edge of the front windshield. They're cut so high that they are pretty much on the roof of the body.

What is the benefit of cuttng the hole so high on the body?

I've attached an example of the high hole. I've also seen the same thing in ads of Mugen's MTX3.

it's set higher so they can use a fuel gun on pits stops.

It also higher because the tank is more towards teh center of the car instead of the front half. That's all. I use to cut that hole on the windshield for my ntc3 but for my mtx-3, it's like half way on the roof in order to open the tank. So...nothing special I think.

i guess it depends on the car as long as you can get to
fuel gun almost straight down on the tank for fast and
clean pits.

Acctually, there is still some confusion on this issue, right? According to ROAR, the vent hole for the engine can have a max of 2 inches diameter, and I believe it is not allowed to protrude into the roofline. However, The refueling hole has been approved and is typically cut into the roof (as a separate hole) unless you run a NTC3 where the fuel tank lines up with the windscreen on most bodies. Acctually, Team AE tried to convince ROAR to not allow refueling holes in the roof since this would have made alot of cars very difficult to refuel, and for a while it almost sounded like ROAR was listening to them. Then ROAR remembered that pretty much every ROAR nats and other level 4 race winners have been using a fuelgun hole in the roof (except when AE were the winners) for as long as anyone can remember. Facing the choice of either allowing the hole or DQ:ing all winners in the past, they wisely decided to allow the hole...

I don't have my new rulebook here, so if anyone knows exactly what the rules state, fire away.

rules change depending what part of the world your
from. that body that was posted for example was from
the japanese nationals. for us. as long as the vent from
windshield to roof line is within spec diam. i forgot the
exact measurement it will pass. the just want to limit
the diam. on the windshield.

The latest rules for the upcoming IFMAR Worlds, just an FYI:

"1.15 Only the following AIR HOLES and sizes are permitted in the bodyshells:

One (1) cooling hole may be cut in the front windscreen only (not intruding on either the roof or bonnet) with a maximum dimension in any direction of 60.00mm.

15.00mm maximum diameter hole in the roof for glow plug access.

Both front side windows and the rear window can be removed for ventilation, except for the side rear windows, which must remain intact.

Re-fuelling hole maximum 50.00mm diameter.

Small holes can be made for the exhaust pipe, transponder and radio antenna.

No other holes are permitted."

Tell me if I might be wrong on this ... I have seen many cars raced by the pros that have the hole on the windscreen. Might the ones at the top near the roof line be because it is a combination for ease of re-fueling and also that the ambient temperature is too cool? Might it be that they want to keep the engines at the right working temperature?

My GS Vision Pro needs a higher hole near to the roof in order to refill fuel to the tank. Its exactly in the middle of the car, meaning middle windscreen and roof top. Just me & my GS.

mtx3racer - I notice that with a Dodge Stratus bodyshell you need to have the hole higher up to the roof line to access to the fuel tank. With the Alfa 156 2.1 there is no real need.

The main reason for this is to reduce wind lag.

A hole in the windscreen will attract more air than a hole in the roof.

PS - Picture driving your car with no winscreen, then picture driving your car with the sunroof open
